VISITOR EXPENDITURE SURVEY

1ST QUARTER / 2012

No. 1 In view of providing more information on inbound visitor expenditure from different places, data on visitors’ spending of six additional countries, namely Malaysia; Singapore; Thailand; the United States; the United Kingdom; and Australia, is released starting from the first quarter of 2012.

Total spending of visitors reached MOP 13.1 billion in the first quarter of 2012, up notably by 35%

year-on-year. Total spending of overnight visitors surged by 39% year-on-year to MOP 10.6 billion, and that of same-day visitors increased by 19% to MOP 2.5 billion. Moreover, total non-shopping spending and shopping spending of visitors amounted to MOP 6.4 billion and MOP 6.7 billion, up by 28% and 42% respectively year-on-year.

Per-capita Spending

In the first quarter of 2012, per-capita spending of visitors was MOP 1,891, an increase of 25%

from a year earlier. Analyzed by place of residence, per-capita spending of those from Mainland China stood at MOP 2,435; Singapore at MOP 1,448; and Malaysia at MOP 1,375. Meanwhile, per- capita spending of long-haul visitors from Australia, the United States of America and the United Kingdom was MOP 1,316, MOP 1,186 and MOP 1,018 respectively.

Per-capita spending of overnight visitors increased by 28% year-on-year to MOP 3,358 and that of same-day visitors rose by 11% to MOP 665. Per-capita spending of overnight and same-day Mainland visitors topped at MOP 4,391 and MOP 842 respectively. Besides, per-capita spending of overnight visitors from Taiwan, China and Singapore reached MOP 3,061 and MOP 2,355 respectively, while that of same-day visitors from Australia and Japan amounted to MOP 468 and MOP 449 respectively.

In the first quarter of 2012, per-capita non-shopping spending of visitors increased by 18%

year-on-year to MOP 921. Per-capita non-shopping spending of visitors from Japan, Singapore and Mainland China stood at MOP 1,192, MOP 1,100 and MOP 971 respectively, while that of long-haul visitors from Australia and the United States of America was MOP 1,092 and MOP 1,030 respectively.

Analyzed by non-shopping spending structure of visitors, Accommodation and Food &

Beverage took the large share of 48% and 36% respectively, while Local Transport accounted for only 4%.

On the other hand, Per-capita shopping spending of visitors was MOP 971, up by 31% over the first quarter of 2011. Mainland visitors had the highest per-capita shopping spending of MOP 1,464, while that of Malaysia at MOP 444; and Thailand at MOP 417. In addition, per-capita shopping spending of Australia and the United Kingdom was MOP 224 and MOP 161 respectively.

Per-capita shopping spending of visitors were mainly on Local Food Products (22%), Jewellery

& Watches (19%) and Clothing (17%). Mainland visitors spent most of their per-capita shopping spending on Jewellery & Watches (21%), Local Food Products (18%) and Clothing (17%). Moreover, Local Food Products were also popular shopping items for long-haul visitors from the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

Characteristics of Visitors

About 57% of the visitors came to Macao mainly for Vacation; other major purposes of visit included Gaming (9%), Visiting Relatives & Friends (8%) and Business & Attending Conventions &

Exhibitions (5%).

With regard to the occupation, 26% were senior officials & managers; 11% were technicians &

associate professionals and 10% were clerks. Moreover, 29% were the unemployed and the economically inactive (i.e. housewives, students and retired persons).

Visitors’ Comments

Visitors were more satisfied with the environmental hygiene and public facilities, with 76% and 68% in favour; however, 11% considered that points of tourist attractions in Macao were inadequate.

For those travelling in package tours, 76% complimented on the services rendered by travel agencies. In addition, there were favourable comments on the services and facilities of hotels (88%) and Gaming establishments (83%). However, 8% of the visitors suggested that the public transport services should be improved.

Sampling Methodology

In the first quarter of 2012, total spending and per-capita spending of visitors were extrapolated from 43,000 effective questionnaires collected from the Visitor Expenditure Survey; meanwhile, 2,100 effective samples were gathered from the Visitors’ Comments Survey.

Visitor Expenditure Survey and Visitors' Comments Survey apply systematic sampling in selecting samples from non-residents of Macao. Enumerators collect data from visitors on their spending and comments on services and facilities during their stay in Macao at different departure points.

Glossary Visitora:

Any person taking a trip to a main destination outside his/her usual environment, for less than a year, for any main purpose other than to be employed by a resident entity in the country or place visited.

Classification of visitors:

a) Overnight visitor: visitor who stays at least one night in a collective or private accommodation in the place visited. In addition, we have added two criteria as follows:

(1) visitor who stays for more than 24 hours in Macao, or

(2) visitor who stays for less than 24 hours and does not stay overnight in Macao but with his/her arrangement made in a collective accommodation such as hotel, guest-house, etc.

b) Same-Day Visitor: visitor who does not spend the night in a collective or private accommodation in the place visited.

Main Purpose of Visit:

Refers to the motivation for the visit or trip, in the absence of which the trip would not have taken place.

Visitor Expenditure:

Refers to the amount paid by visitors for acquisition of consumption goods and services for own use or to give away. It includes expenditures by visitors themselves, as well as expenses that are paid or reimbursed by others such as relatives, friends or employers. Visitor expenditure excludes donation, acquisition of fixed assets and expenses on goods for resale purposes.
