A "Visual Feast" of Chinese Calligraphy at HKUST

The first Hong Kong exhibition by three rising stars of classical Chinese calligraphy opens at the Library Gallery of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on 19 September.

Titled "Roaming in the Arts", the exhibition features the work of members of the Lake Tai Canglang

Calligraphy SocietyÀHua Rende, Hu Lunguang and Chu YunÀa group credited with reinvigorating classical Chinese calligraphy.

Founded in 1987 at the Canglang Pavilion in Suzhou, the society has exhibited extensively in Asia and the US, but this is the first time their work has been shown in Hong Kong.

The Calligraphers

Hua Rende is the founder and chief executive of the society. He excels in all scripts but his clerical script

writing is particularly fascinating.

Hu Lunguang is a highly accomplished calligrapher and seal carver. He often combines these skills to

create new devotional images, uniting ancient and modern influences.

Chu Yun is particularly interested in the draft-cursive script (zhangcao), which he has studied on

archaeological finds and relics.

Dr Hui-shu Lee is an Assistant Professor of Humanities at HKUST and a specialist in Chinese art history.

She also introduced Hua Rende to HKUST in 1995. "Many consider the group's work to be the best among that of young calligraphers today."

"Looking at their work, our feelings for antiquity are aroused-but these ensembles of pictures and writing also possess a sense of the modern-a visual feast for all."

Min-min Chang, Director of the HKUST Library, explains the title "Roaming in the Arts". "It was inspired by Confucius' writing: "Set heart on the Way, base yourself on virtue, lean upon benevolence and roam in the arts."

The exhibition opens on 19 September and runs until 19 November at the Library Gallery, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Clear Water Bay, Kowloon. The exhibition is open: Monday to Friday, 8 am - 11 pm, on Saturday, 9 am - 7 pm, and on Sundays, 1 pm - 9 pm.
