HKUST Awards New Medals to Distinguished
Faculty & Graduates
Three new medals created by the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology to commend distinguished teaching, contribution to student service and outstanding academic performance will be presented at the University’s congregation, to be held on 4 November 1994 at the HKUST campus.

The three medals are the Michael G. Gale Medal for Distinguished Teaching, the Stephen Cheong Kam-chuen Medal for Distinguished Service to the Student Body and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Academic Achievement Medal.
This year, five deserving individuals will be the first recipients of these medals.
The Michael G. Gale Medal for Distinguished Teaching was established by the University Council in 1994 to commemorate the distinguished service of the founding Council Member, the late Mr Michael G. Gale. Members of teaching staff at all levels are eligible for nomination to this annual award.
This year, Dr. Joseph Lian Yi-zheng from the Department of Economics was elected winner of the medal, for he “has inspired enthusiasm in his students and continues to give his time and energy unselfishly to ensure his students have the best possible chance to learn and develop. He has shown continued pursuit of excellence in his teaching and has been active in curriculum development.”
The Stephen Cheong Kam-chuen Medal for Distinguished Service to the Student Body was established by the University Council in 1993 in memory of The Honourable Stephen Cheong Kam- chuen, founding Council Member and distinguished public servant. It is awarded to a graduating student who best exemplifies the qualities of caring, constructive and dedicated leadership for which Stephen Cheong is remembered. Mr Sean Lin, the first President of the Students’ Union, will be presented with the medal.
The HKUST Academic Achievement Medal was established to recognise undergraduates who have achieved outstanding academic performance during their university career. The three graduates to receive this medal are Mr Chan Kwok-leung, BSc in Physics> School of Science; Mr Wang I& BEng in Computer Science, School of Engineering; and Mr Har Hing-chi, BBA in Accounting, School of Business & Management. I
