What does the word “family” mean to you? An American study in 2006 showed that people today have several different ideas about what makes a family. They interviewed some people. Over 99% of the people agree that a husband, a wife, and a child are a family. At the same time, 94% see a parent with a child as a family, 91% say a husband and a wife, without children, are a family, and 81% think a man and a woman, with a child, but not married, are a family, too.
The study also found that whether people have a child or not is very important in the modern thinking on family.
Though 81% think a man and a woman, not married, with a child, are a family, the percentage (%) drops to 40% if the couple doesn’t have a child. This is also true with same-sex couples. About 60% see two men, or two women, with a child, as a family, but only 32% think so when the couple doesn’t have a child.
In the study, the people see two men or two women living together as a family and they often think it’s OK for same- sex couples to get married. This is not surprising. However, not everyone opens their arms to same-sex couples: the study said 30% have no problem seeing pets as part of one’s family, but they do not think a same-sex couple is a family.

Travel Hot Spot:Guishan Island
Guishan Island is near the north-east sea of Taiwan. It is the largest island of Yilan County. In fact, Guishan Island is a volcanic island. It got the interesting name because of its shape. It looks like a turtle with a round body and a head.
The most interesting part is the turtle’s tail. It is in the west of the island. It’s a one-kilometer-long beach with lots of rocks and round stones. They roll and move with the strong season winds and waves. When people look at the island from far away, it looks just like a turtle waving its tail to the north or south.
Many people take boat trips around Guishan Island to do whale watching. There are many kinds of whales around it. The best time to take a whale watching trip is from April to September. Haven’t experienced the trip yet? It’s a must-see!

Many people love to drink cola, but very few know cola was first made by mistake. It happened in 1886. A man went to a store to buy cold medicine. "The medicine is sold out, and Dr. Pemberton isn't in now. What can I do?" thought the clerk. In the end, he decided to make the medicine by himself. However, he put something different in the medicine. The next day, the man went to the store again and said "Thank you, I got better after drinking your medicine, and it tasted really yummy!" The doctor thought it was strange because the medicine shouldn't taste yummy. He asked the clerk and got the whole story. After that, Dr.
