The Olympic Games are the most important global sporting events. Thousands of people around the world take part in(參加) the games every four years. There are Summer Olympic Games and Winter Olympic Games. Each of them is held every four years. The first Olympic Games were held in Greece(希臘)in 776 B.C. which were considered to be a way to show their love to the greatest god in the world, Zeus. The first Olympic Games were running races. At that time, any wars had to be stopped in order to let players from different places join the important activity. The Olympic Games were stopped by the king Theodosius I in 393 A.D., and Baron Pierre de Coubertin started the Olympic Games again in 1894.

The host city for Olympic Games is usually chosen seven to eight years before the games. Many cities keep looking for chances to host the Olympic Games in order to show the world that their countries are

advanced in the global village. These hosting cities, like Tokyo(東京)in 1964, Mexico City(墨西哥)in 1968, and Beijing(北京)in 2008, not only showed themselves to the world but also made a lot of money from people who went to their countries to see or join the activity.

Most of the games were held in Europe and North America. So far, the United States has hosted most of the Olympic Games, four Summer and four Winter. The 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro(里約熱內盧), which was in Brazil(巴西), was the first Olympics ever held by a South American country. However, no Olympic Games have been held in Africa(非洲)until now.

(D) The more money a country makes, the happier the people in the country will be.

(C)

How happy is your homeland? The United Nations has been sharing World Happiness Report since 2012, and the report of 2016 is finally here. Denmark(丹麥) is found to be the happiest country in the world, followed by Switzerland, Iceland, Norway(挪威) and Finland(芬蘭). The United States is placed 13th while Taiwan is placed 35th on the list compared(比較) to 157 countries in the world.

The report shows that people who live in the happiest country tend to live longer and have more

social(社會的)support(支持)and life choices. They are more generous and like to share. They are willing to help people in difficult situations and ask for nothing in return. The least happy countries included Burundi(布 隆迪), Syria(敘利亞), Togo(多哥), Afghanistan(阿富汗) and Benin(貝寧) where people have suffered(受 難)from the corruption(貪汙), poverty(貧窮)and war for years.

In 2012, the United Nations declared(宣布)March 20 as ―“World Happiness Day” and set happiness and well-being as the universal goals. It is not just about how much money you earn but about how much you would like to do for others and the environment around you. In Norway, it is not an unusual sight to see people volunteer to paint each other’s houses even though they can all pay someone else to do that.

Helping other people can bring you the happiness that can’t be bought in any store.

Every time when your parents ask you to finish all your food on the plate, you may wonder: what’s so terrible about leaving a few vegetables or pieces of meat uneaten? Of course, every little bit adds up. Did you know that every year, over a third of all food gets thrown away? That’s 1.3 billion tons(公噸)— enough to feed over three billion hungry people. Many countries have taken steps to reduce their food waste.

One popular way of reducing waste is to redistribute(重新分配) uneaten food. France became the first country asking supermarkets to donate unsold food. In other places, the focus is on preventing people from wasting food.

In South Korea, residents(居民) must pay by weight the food they throw away. This successfully reduced food waste in Seoul alone by 119 tons per day. What’s more, Japanese want to take a step ahead. They think the food industry(工業) should be more sensitive(敏感的) to weather and make sure they produce the right amount(數量) of food. For example, people often buy more ice cream on hot summer days and more warming food when it’s cold.

In fact, there is a long way to go in the fight against(對抗)wasted food. Taking only what you can eat or saving food you can’t finish for every meal could make a big difference.
