To most people, AIDA means Verdi’s opera, sung by stars with big lungs and finely tuned ears.

To a growing group of extreme sports enthusiasts, however, AIDA is an acronym for something else, although outstanding lungs and ears are also what count. They are not divas but divers, their sport being to go as deep underwater as is humanly possible on a single breath of air. AIDA is the Association Internationale pour le Développement de l’Apnée. The word Apnée comes from the Greek apnea, which means cessation of breathing. The members of AIDA also call themselves free divers because they, like deep-sea creatures, are able to enjoy a long dive in the ocean.

1. According to the reading, what do divers think the acronym AIDA stands for?

2. Which language does the French word “Apnée” come from? What does the word mean?

3. Please write down the reason that AIDA members call themselves free divers.
