About 159,900 households had used the Internet in 2014, accounting for 84.3% of the total, up by 1.7 percentage points year-on-year.
With the popularity of smartphones, the proportion of households using mobile broadband to access the Internet increased by 7.2 percentage points year-on- year to 87.1%. The proportion of households using fixed broadband connection decreased by 6.4 percentage points to 79.9%. Meanwhile, households using fibre optical broadband connection almost doubled from a year earlier, at 17,700.
Meanwhile, 153,700 households possessed computer equipment, sharing 81.1% of the total, down by 0.8 percentage points year-on-year. Households with desktop computers totalled 121,000, down by 0.8%
year-on-year; those with portable computers (85,500) and tablets (80,700) rose by 6.6% and 33.6%
respectively year-on-year.

The Internet usage rate for individuals with tertiary education reached 95.6%, and the rate for those with senior secondary education was 79.3%, up by 1.0 and 2.4 percentage points respectively year-on-year;
meanwhile, the rate for individuals with primary education or lower increased by 5.5 percentage points to 45.2%.
Regarding purpose of using the Internet, 86.9% of the Internet users used the Internet for communication and 75.6% for web entertainment, up by 6.6 and 2.1 percentage points respectively year-on-year;
meanwhile, information search shared 66.9%, down by 6.3 percentage points.

Year-on-year Difference (p.p.) Among the population aged 3 and above, there were 420,500 Internet users, up by 11.9% year-on-year; the rate of Internet usage was 69.8%, up by 4.0 percentage points year-on-year. Male and female had a respective Internet usage rate of 70.2% and 69.4%, both up by 4.0 percentage points.
The rate of Internet usage for population aged 15-24 reached 95.9%, up slightly by 0.1 percentage point year-on-year. The rate for other age groups also registered increase, with that for aged 35-44 rising by 10.7 percentage points year-on-year.
As regards frequency of using the Internet, 93.4% of the Internet users had used the Internet daily, up by 2.4 percentage points year-on-year.

Moreover, 13.8% of the Internet users had shopped online, up by 0.2 percentage points year-on-year.
Median Internet shopping spending amounted to MOP 1,000 in the fourth quarter of 2014, up by 33.3% year-on- year.
Internet users who bought travel services online increased by 101.6%
year-on-year to 12,500.

Among the population aged 3 and above, there were 555,900 mobile phone users, accounting for 92.3% of the total.
The proportion of population who accessed the Internet using a mobile phone (79.5%) increased by 10.0 percentage points year-on-year; meanwhile, the proportion of population who used a desktop computer to access the Internet (57.5%) dropped by 8.7 percentage points.
Moreover, 96.6% of the Internet users accessed the Internet at home, similar to that in 2013; the rpoportion of Internet users accessing the Internet at any location via mobile phone increased by 10.0 percentage points to 79.5%.
Computer users totalled 365,400, the rate of computer usage dropped by 1.1 percentage points year-on-year to 60.6%.

Explanatory Notes
Data on Survey on Information Technology Usage in the Household Sector were collected in the fourth quarter of 2014 through a supplementary questionnaire of the Employment Survey.
Total sample size consists of 2,100 residential units and the observation unit is individuals aged 3 and above residing in these units. In the sample, a total of 1,960 units were occupied, comprising 1,592 successful interviews, 56 refusals and 312 non-contacts; the response rate stood at 81.2%.
The reference period of Information Technology Usage in the Household Sector refers to the three months prior to the date of interview.
Multiple answers were allowed on the types of computer equipment and Internet connection, the purpose, location and device for accessing the Internet, as well as the type of Internet shopping.
