-2.7 In December 2020, 14% of the interviewed restaurants & similar

establishments registered a year-on-year rise in receipts, higher than expected by 7 percentage points. None of the interviewed Western Restaurants predicted a year-on-year growth in receipts in December, yet 10% of them registered an actual increase. Meanwhile, 73% of the interviewed establishments reported a year-on-year decline in receipts, 7 percentage points lower than the forecast. The corresponding proportions of Japanese & Korean Restaurants (53%) and Chinese Restaurants (80%) were lower than the forecast by 11 percentage points and 10 percentage points respectively (Table 2).

There were 21% of the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments expecting their receipts to increase year-on-year or remain stable in January 2021, a growth of 1 percentage point from December 2020. Meanwhile, the corresponding proportion for the interviewed retailers was 41%, a 12 percentage point rise from December 2020.

Among the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments, the proportion of Local Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops (29%) recording a year-on-year rise in receipts or steady performance in December 2020 went down by 3 percentage points from November, while the corresponding share of Chinese Restaurants (20%) rose by 2 percentage points (Table 1).

There were 27% of the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments reporting a year-on-year rise in receipts or steady performance in December 2020, a decrease of around 1 percentage point from November. As regards retail trade, 31% of the interviewed retailers registered a year-on-year sales rise or steady performance in December, up by 4 percentage points from November.

Among the interviewed retailers, 26% showed a year-on-year sales rise in December 2020, higher than expected by 11 percentage points. The corresponding proportions of Leather Goods Retailers (80%), Motor Vehicle Retailers (67%) and Watches, Clocks & Jewellery Retailers (39%) were higher than the forecast by 40 percentage points, 22 percentage points and 22 percentage points respectively, while the share of Supermarkets (33%) was lower than predicted by 11 percentage points. Meanwhile, 69% of the interviewed retailers reported a year-on- year sales decrease in December, 2 percentage points lower than the forecast (Table 5).

3.8 Among the interviewed establishments, 33% of the Local Style Cafes,

Congee & Noodle Shops and 42% of the Japanese & Korean Restaurants expected their receipts to increase year-on-year or remain stable in January 2021, up by 11 percentage points and 5 percentage points respectively from December 2020. Meanwhile, 96% of the Chinese Restaurants anticipated a year-on-year decline in receipts in January 2021, an increase of 6 percentage points from December 2020 (Table 3).

The proportions of Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles Retailers (22%) and Watches, Clocks & Jewellery Retailers (39%) recording a year-on-year sales rise or steady performance in December 2020 increased by 11 percentage points and 6 percentage points respectively from November, whereas the corresponding share of Supermarkets (56%) fell by 11 percentage points (Table 4).

14.2 Among the interviewed retailers, the proportion of Department Stores

(36%) forecasting a year-on-year sales increase or stable performance in January 2021 rose by 27 percentage points from December 2020, and the corresponding shares of Motor Vehicle Retailers (67%) and Watches, Clocks & Jewellery Retailers (33%) both went up by 11 percentage points; moreover, the proportion of Adults’ Clothing Retailers (35%) grew by 10 percentage points while that of Supermarkets (56%) fell by 11 percentage points (Table 6).

Owing to the above stated limitations, the Survey results only serve as a reference on the business trends of the surveyed industries. Hence, it is recommended to take into account other relevant data when evaluating the overall business performance of these industries.

Difference (p.p.)

The sample of the Business Climate Survey on Restaurants & Similar Establishments and Retail Trade was selected based on the value of receipts of the establishments, which comprises 188 restaurants & similar establishments and 135 retailers that accounted for 50% and 65% of the respective industry’s receipts in 2018. The Survey results were not extrapolated and only reflect the assessment of the business performance and expectations of the sample restaurants and retailers.
