75.0 In September, the proportions of Local Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle

Shops (30%) showing a year-on-year rise in receipts or steady performance went down by 6 percentage points from August, whereas the share of Japanese & Korean Restaurants (53%) increased by 21 percentage points. Meanwhile, all of the interviewed Western Restaurants registered a year-on-year decrease in receipts in September (Table 1).

There were 21% of the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments recording a year-on-year rise in receipts or steady performance in September, a decrease of 2 percentage points from August. As regards retail trade, 20% of the interviewed retailers registered a year-on-year sales rise or steady performance in September, down by 1 percentage point from the preceding month.

There were 23% of the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments expecting their receipts to increase year-on-year or remain stable in October, an increase of 3 percentage points from September; the corresponding share for retailers grew by 1 percentage point from September to 24%.

Among the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments, 14%

registered a year-on-year rise in receipts in September, higher than expected by 7 percentage points. The corresponding proportion of Japanese & Korean Restaurants (26%) exceeded the forecast by 21 percentage points. On the other hand, 79% of the interviewed establishments recorded a year-on-year decline in receipts, 2 percentage points lower than the forecast (Table 2).

Among the interviewed establishments, 13% of the Chinese Restaurants

and 28% of the Local Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops expected their receipts to increase year-on-year or remain stable in October, up by 8 percentage points and 2 percentage points respectively from September (Table 3).

The proportions of Leather Goods Retailers (20%) and Motor Vehicle Retailers (78%) recording a year-on-year sales rise or steady performance in September surged by 20 percentage points and 11 percentage points respectively from August, whereas the corresponding share of Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles Retailers (10%) fell by 10 percentage points. Meanwhile, all of the interviewed Adults’ Clothing Retailers registered a year-on-year sales decrease in September (Table 4).

Among the interviewed retailers, 13% showed a year-on-year sales rise in September, higher than expected by 4 percentage points. The corresponding proportions of Motor Vehicle Retailers (56%) and Supermarkets (44%) surpassed the forecast by 22 percentage points and 11 percentage points respectively. Meanwhile, 80% of the interviewed retailers reported a year-on-year sales decrease in September, 4 percentage points higher than predicted. The corresponding proportions of Adults' Clothing Retailers (100%) exceeded the forecast by 25 percentage points, while that of Leather Goods Retailers (80%) was lower than the forecast by 20 percentage points (Table 5).

Results presented in this report were not extrapolated and only reflect the business performance and expectations of the sampling units. In order to achieve timeliness of the results, restaurants and retailers may not get hold of the actual sales figures at the time of data collection.

Owing to the above stated limitations, the Survey results only serve as a reference on the business trends of the surveyed industries. Hence, it is recommended to take into account other relevant data when evaluating the overall business performance of these industries.

Among the interviewed retailers, the proportion of Leather Goods Retailers (40%) forecasting a year-on-year sales increase or stable performance in October expanded by 40 percentage points from September, whereas the corresponding shares of Adults’ Clothing Retailers (35%) and Department Stores (27%) rose by 10 percentage points and 9 percentage points respectively. On the other hand, all of the interviewed Watches, Clocks & Jewellery Retailers anticipated a year-on- year sales decrease in October (Table 6).

The sample of the Business Climate Survey on Restaurants & Similar Establishments and Retail Trade was selected based on the value of receipts of the establishments, which comprises 188 restaurants & similar establishments and 135 retailers that accounted for 50% and 65% of the respective industry’s receipts in 2018. The Survey results were not extrapolated and only reflect the assessment of the business performance and expectations of the sample restaurants and retailers.
