Japanese & Korean Restaurant
Among the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments, the proportions of Japanese & Korean Restaurants (47%) and Chinese Restaurants (17%) recording a year-on-year rise in receipts or steady performance in November went down by 11 percentage points and 4 percentage points respectively from October, while the corresponding share of Local Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops (32%) rose by 1 percentage point (Table 1).

There were 28% of the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments reporting a year-on-year rise in receipts or steady performance in November, a decrease of 2 percentage points from October. As regards retail trade, 27% of the interviewed retailers registered a year-on-year sales rise or steady performance in November, up by 2 percentage points from the preceding month.
There were 20% of the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments expecting their receipts to increase year-on-year or remain stable in December, down by 4 percentage points from November. Meanwhile, the corresponding proportion for the interviewed retailers was 29%, representing a decrease of around 1 percentage point from November.
In November, 16% of the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments registered a year-on-year rise in receipts, higher than expected by 10 percentage points. The corresponding proportions of Japanese & Korean Restaurants (26%) and Western Restaurants (10%) exceeded the forecast by 16 percentage points and 10 percentage points respectively. Meanwhile, 72% of the interviewed establishments reported a year-on-year decline in receipts, 3 percentage points lower than the forecast (Table 2).

The proportions of Watches, Clocks & Jewellery Retailers (33%) and Adults’ Clothing Retailers (15%) recording a year-on-year sales rise or steady performance in November increased by 17 percentage points and 10 percentage points respectively from October, whereas the corresponding shares of Supermarkets (67%) and Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles Retailers (11%) fell by 22 percentage points and 9 percentage points respectively (Table 4).

Among the interviewed retailers, 18% showed a year-on-year sales rise in November, higher than expected by 5 percentage points. The corresponding proportions of Leather Goods Retailers (80%) and Watches, Clocks & Jewellery Retailers (22%) were higher than the forecast by 40 percentage points and 17 percentage points respectively.
Meanwhile, 73% of the interviewed retailers reported a year-on-year sales decrease in November, 3 percentage points higher than predicted.
The corresponding proportions of Supermarkets (33%) and Adults' Clothing Retailers (85%) exceeded the forecast by 22 percentage points and 15 percentage points respectively (Table 5).

Results presented in this report were not extrapolated and only reflect the business performance and expectations of the sampling units. In order to achieve timeliness of the results, restaurants and retailers may not get hold of the actual sales figures at the time of data collection.
Owing to the above stated limitations, the Survey results only serve as a reference on the business trends of the surveyed industries. Hence, it is recommended to take into account other relevant data when evaluating the overall business performance of these industries.
Difference (p.p.)
The sample of the Business Climate Survey on Restaurants & Similar Establishments and Retail Trade was selected based on the value of receipts of the establishments, which comprises 188 restaurants & similar establishments and 135 retailers that accounted for 50% and 65% of the respective industry’s receipts in 2018. The Survey results were not extrapolated and only reflect the assessment of the business performance and expectations of the sample restaurants and retailers.
