Abstract

In this paper, qualitative research methods, Department of Library and Information Science undergraduate education development issues and study results will be Department of Library and

Information Science graduates to graduate school because you want to convert subject areas grouped into "personal factors", "map information Department of factors ", and" social environment factors

"such as three categories, under which 11 items were included.

Then focus on Library and Information Science itself factors into a

phenomenon across cases, and finally the author proposes "the importance of rectification of names" , "use the influence of

teachers", and "general education or professional education" and other three recommendations, as the conclusion of this article.

This article explores the problems of LIS undergraduate education in Taiwan using the methodology of qualitative research. After analyzing interview transcripts, the researcher induces three major factors (personal, LIS department, and social environment) as the reasons for these interviewees to apply for the admission from non-LIS graduate schools. Among these three factors, the "LIS department factor" is further discussed. The common characteristics among interviewees are then

described. At the end, three suggestions are proposed as the conclusion.

1. Preface

In the classroom or informal occasions, one often hears domestic Library and Information Science Department of the teachers

phenomenon clearly revealed, so I selected qualitative research methods, hoping to in-depth interviews and document analysis, to understand these "real" in which students were "real" experiences and feelings, trying to further their studies from their shared history and the inner world, explore the University Library and Information Science Department of the domestic education problem.

In this study started before the implementation, I read over the

"university college entrance," "values, and further studies will,"

"Career Planning", "transfer department / selection," "plan funding prospects of graduates," etc. quantitative and qualitative research literature, in order to increase the theoretical sense, as a follow-up interview guide the development and analysis of data reference.

2. Literature

The Library and Information Science Education major in

undergraduate school, and college entrance exam scores filled in accordance with the voluntary distribution of further education system, are unique to the practice in Taiwan, and the American Library and Information Science Education and other more

Third, study design

The following details on the study and implementation steps, respectively, of:

(A) research tools

This study used depth interviews to gather information, so the research tool is "the researcher" and "semi-structured interview guide"

(see Appendix A).

impressive event (ie audition entrance) of course as a starting point, and then back out the way to please the respondents recalled the University for four years, and high school When in class, experience and feelings; that through the establishment of contexts, so that respondents could more easily tell his experience. This outline is based on interviews with researchers and the first two respondents (Case I and Case II) as a pre-test interviews and interactive, a little out of the amendment. Because the adjustment is not made, but the case I and case II to interview more or less answered the

researcher's research questions, therefore the data analysis will also be measured before the interviews included in the analysis.

(B) of the sample

Interviewees of this study is set to "Library and Information Science should be lifelong (or graduate), have applications in other

disciplines Institute for college entrance, and through the audit with those who participated in the interview." Such selection criteria for two main reasons:

1. Because good grades are eligible to participate in the selection if the Institute entrance, but although they had owned in the map department of excellent academic

2. Entrance examination for the test of experience (from the decision to apply, select subjects, preparing documents,

Therefore, this study uses "purposive sampling", first the researchers themselves familiar with the map data at National Taiwan University Department of younger brothers and sisters in the senior school together in this study identified the design of the

To highlight that, due to the sample in this study only five, and Taiwan University students are, so there must be limitations on the findings of this study were based restrictions. In the future if time and resources permit, should visit other domestic Library and Information Science students, to compare whether the cultural differences because of the schools have different results.

Researchers at the right of the respondents informed later, by telephone or e-mail contact with their shows you want to

respondents describe their individual identification (ie name) does not appear in studies, but researchers may need to do their part of the conversation directly quoted, the results obtained the consent of the respondents.

(D) data analysis

I originally planned the content of all interviews transcribed

verbatim scripts to facilitate subsequent data analysis. But access to cases and case 2 a day, recording equipment, a problem can not clearly hear the interview, but fortunately the end of the day of the interview the researchers discovered the problem, then remember

on the interview, a live notes The assistance will generally interview to record, then by the respondents view scripts, they think that there was virtually no distortion, or help out with some additions and amendments, so the researchers will interview these two scripts into the analysis. The other three scripts are completely made by transcription of interview tapes.

Analysis of data, the researchers used grounded theory techniques, the transcription of the interview to read the scripts word for word over and over again, and finally analyze the impact of domestic graduates in Library and Information Science Department of the reason you want to transfer, including: interest, aptitude / ability, trying, , on the pursuit of knowledge, curriculum planning, scholarly culture, educational goals, the teachers, diploma, social values, economic factors such as 11, to further these projects into personal factors, map information system factors, and social environment factors three categories. (E) Reliability and validity

Researchers to ensure research reliability and validity, make the following efforts:

1. Each transcript is issued on completion of transcription, are returned to the respondents in person and then look to see if it shows real thought process and his views; researchers and invited respondents to add their own amendments and copies of transcripts of the draft , content of services so lazy

expressive form, the researchers based on the revised final version of the data analysis.

2. As the qualitative research data collection and analysis of data with the same time these properties, researchers from the end of the third interview, he and the respondents shared the previous initial "temporary" data analysis results, to

assess whether the respondents generally their own experiences and feelings meet.

3. In addition to the researchers collect, analyze interviews, the respondents were also asked to provide their entrance exams for the test when the various documents prepared, including autobiography, resume, study plan, on the one hand can be used to understand the respondents background information, on the other hand used to do "method" Determination of the triangle.

Fourth, the results

In this study, the first research question is: Why do the Library and Information Science will be the loss of good graduates? The second research question was: Library and Information Science can do to to improve this situation? The results of the study tried to answer these two questions.

1. Institute of Information graduates plan to stage the reason you want to convert subject areas

According to the results of interviews, researchers identified:

interest, aptitude / ability, try to mind, the pursuit of knowledge, curriculum design, scholarly culture, educational goals, the teachers, diploma, social values, economic factors 11 Figure information to the graduate school graduates want to change the reasons for subject areas. It can be further classified into individual factors, map information system factors and the social environment factors, three categories. Hereby are as follows:

1. Personal factors - including interest, aptitude / ability, try the mentality of the four pursuit of knowledge.

2. Map Information Department of factors - including curriculum design, scholarly culture, education, teachers four factors.

3. Social environment factors - including the diploma, social values, economic factors, etc. 3.

I believe that the personal factors and social environment factors that influence each other, as Taiwan's university entrance exam system for a long time, resulting in a high school only to indulge in textbooks, there is no opportunity to seriously explore their own aptitudes and interests lie, not to time and effort to understand the various departments of universities in subject areas and core

knowledge, then the final exam scores of almost all of the level of their own, according to the previous year's ranking and volunteer with the department of social value assigned to fill volunteer; Thus,

And such problems, with the Division of Immunization's last college entrance exams may be gradually improved, but the state policy of wide implications for further studies, not the key concern of this study, the researchers conclude that the three factors, further will lock the focus on Library and Information Science can improve and control their own projects.

(B) Library and Information Science itself is a closer look at factors

Information system itself in Figure factors, the study identified the curriculum design, scholarly culture, educational goals, teacher, the four, I examine the transcription of scripts over and over again, and found the respondents were "Curriculum Planning" and "Education objectives "of these two feelings most. 1. Department Name aspects -

Expressed by key respondents preferred the new system name (that is, "Library and Information Science"), but also said the new system were relatively high degree of social recognition, but they also believe that curriculum and a department name, "literally" is the Department name change truly lies. The following excerpt of respondents in this view:

"I prefer the new system name, while their parents because of"

information "about the word and think it is a good way department.

"" Library Science "and" Library and Information Science,

"compared to, of course, the new system were more dominant.

"should feel good, so (I ) but also feel good. "(Case 2)

"Title will be changed with different friends, at least in the undergraduate enrollment of students, they will attract more ignorant of high school students to fill the department, because it has" information "word ...." (Case 3)

"I think the course (is) there are some changes, more or less the"

information "that word in there, I'd say" library "compared with such a department name, or a change. That on the others, it I do not know, maybe on the next future mentees, the words "information"

the words, scores on the forward run, I think the significance of them here now! but the real subject nature has not changed, it does not really depend on course .... "(Case 4)

"Sounds better (laughs) ... After all, there is also adding some new courses it! But that ratio ... I do not know, because now the school's other departments also change a department name, and then their (new) courses also have reached a certain proportion Well, I feel as if the proportion of department are not enough. "(Case 5)

2. Curriculum -

Most respondents (representing 80% of the interview) that the traditional library science courses are not interested;

but for some elective courses and computer courses are very positive aspects. Generally speaking, they do not like because the former need to memorize or follow the "dead"

rule, while the latter is because the practical and quite well received. The following excerpt of respondents in this view:

"... Teacher wants me to read a lot of literature and studies, the new concept of Shang me helpful, but I can not be implemented, not

really make a hook like the ideal setting moon - Sui Ming and disaffected." (Case 2)

"We have students question the things that we teach is there any?

Some more later on the computer system's curriculum, some students will feel after contact, said ..., they are more practical from the point of view, there are those computer science in skill, you can make something, then they also believe that society so-called

"professional" is that you can make things come, especially in

system design, then it will say "what's the use of our things, we they can not make for "more." (Case 3)

"My freshman year computer science classes feel quite practical, common sense and be very important or foundation, which in this generation. In the College of which can be built to the kind of course in fact quite rare." (Case 4)

"Some of the students in class I feel I do not know the future will not be used ... I would think not sure that on this course is not really so helpful. ... I feel like X to open some of the lessons the teacher is very necessary is the current trend, if we line the students do not learn these words, basically find many people than the outside, even if other school information systems plan, than they are behind a lot. "(Case 5)

3. Educational goals -

Department of respondents think the map data seems to undergraduate education in favor of vocational training, to train qualified librarians to target mainly those rules

become the core curriculum required courses. The following excerpt of respondents in this view:

"... I think we were in the curriculum design, because when the space-time should be designed out of context, when the majority of university graduates will go to work, but it lacks expertise in this area, so a lot of the more practical course, then we become a little undergraduate professional school like the kind of training. "(Case 3)

"(Department) to open a number of elective courses, and some freshman courses, I feel pretty good. "(Case 4)

(C) the common phenomenon of cross-case

Respondents choose to switch tracks, audition to participate in the Graduate Institute of outside individual although the reasons for special consideration, but can be broadly classified into the above three factors. In addition, researchers in the script of interview transcripts also found in the following five cross-case common phenomenon in the proposed share with readers.

1. National University, the goal for the audition

Audition to participate in the Graduate Institute of the five foreign students, are based on the same level of Taiwan University and National University of goal. Cases a choice to participate in the audition Tsinghua University and National Chiao Tung University, National Yang Ming University selected two cases, three cases

chosen Tsinghua University, and the case decided only four and five participate in National Taiwan University, his audition.

2. Interest is the biggest consideration when selections

Five respondents, in addition to two cases in the course of the interview has been referred to "prospects", "work", "way out", "eat Tau Road" and other economic factors, the other people that have chosen to emphasize their screening test is based on the interest.

Value of mentioning is that they often because of repair of the auxiliary system or vice-major, the more certain his lines on the map data not interested, but decided to switch lines. Case 3 and case 4 even dubbed them the election was also less popular than the map data, and even parents are worried that they can do graduate work in the future.

3. Teacher who is often critical of
