․ An electromyographic analysis of ‘bend the tool not the wrist’ concept on power tools:

Abstract:

‘Bend the tool not the wrist’ concept is widely used in non-powered hand tools, as unnatural or non- neutral postures are associated with musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Also, deviations from neutral posture diminish the force capacity of human hand, therefore, hand tools which require non-neutral posture also demand greater amount of relative muscular force. Moreover, excessive force requirements are also tied with MSDs. Nowadays the concept of ‘bend the tool not the wrist’ is appreciated among tool designers, however, in some case of some tools, the concept is not easily applied. Use of typical one-piece, straight handle angle grinder might still require the user to apply forces with flexed or deviated wrist. Although there are angle grinders with rotatable handles which could reduce the ergonomic load, anecdotal evidence suggest that the rotatable handle is ncomfortable, unnecessary and adds to the cost of the tools. The aim of this study was to analyze the objective and subjective benefits of a rotatable handle. An angle grinder may be used for grinding or cutting, in order to maintain straight wrist the handle should be rotated by 90 deg.

Three wrist postures were studied: A – handle in grinding position, wrist flexed & ulnar deviated, trigger activated with three fingers; B - handle in grinding position, wrist close to neutral posture, trigger activated with thumb; C – handle in cutting position, wrist neutral or with slight ulnar deviation, trigger activated with three fingers. Ten habitual tool users participated in the study. Subjects were familiarized with the tool and task one day prior experiment. Electromyographic (EMG) activity of m. flexor digitorum superficialis, m. extensor digitorum and m. biceps brachii was chosen as objective measure of work load. A custom build electromyography was used, a 12-bit resolution microcontroller (Smart Projects, Strambino, Italy) was used for A/D conversion and EMG function was added with a 4 channel circuit (Flex Volt, Lebanon, USA).

Bipolar dual Ag/AgCl disposable electrodes (Noraxon, Scottsdale, USA) were used in order to maintain constant inter-electrode distance (2.0 cm). Raw EMG signal was recorded at sampling rate 1 kHz and processed with Matlab software. EMG activities during torque buildup and free running were normalized to EMG activity of maximum voluntary contraction. The results allow to favor wrist postures C & B over

(7)

posture A. EMG activities of m. biceps brachii did not differ between wrist postures. Also it should be noted that EMG activity of m. extensor digitorum was the lowest during the resting phase of posture A (wrist flexion) – therefore, EMG activity does not reflect the subjective comfort.

․ Physical load among auxiliary construction workers and its analysis with objective ergonomics research method:

Abstract:

There is growing number of work related musculoskeletal disorders among workers in construction industry. Employees in construction professions admit physical load and discomfort in various body parts after the work. Accordingly to Eurostat statistical data 60% of total work related diseases are attributed to musculoskeletal disorders in Latvia. The aim of this study was to determine physical load of construction auxiliary workers and bricklayers using objective ergonomics research method HR monitoring and subjective ergonomic risk assessment methods. The research involved full time 8 auxiliary construction workers and 7 bricklayers. Analysis of the heart rate monitoring data proved that objective physical load analysis method is more precise than subjective workload evaluation methods. Results showed that construction workers workload falls into hard and moderate work heaviness category. More experienced workers with longer length of service were subjected to lower work eaviness category.

․ A new elderly clothing design reduce nurse aids’ occupational injury in nursing home:

Abstract:

In the country which is entering aging society, an increasing number of the elderly living in nursing homes. The elderly who live there suffer from different kinds of chronic diseases including degenerative arthritis, diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. Assisting the elderly dressing is one of the most difficult tasks of nurse aids’ works. During dressing process, regardless of nurse aids or the elderly have spent a lot of time, resulting in a cumulative nurse aid musculoskeletal injuries. Nurse aids assist the elderly to dress under high pressure environment for a long time, they always get work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs), non-traumatic soft tissue musculoskeletal disorders, back and shoulder injury owing to inappropriate application of force. Good clothing must design in accordance with the elderly’s shape, make fabric softer, and let the elderly have less movement in joints. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to design a new elderly clothing to reduce the cumulative damage of nurse aids from assisting the elderly dressing effectively. Many aspects need to be considered to uphold the core-concept of elderly and nursing aide-oriented clothing designs to enhance nurse aids’ efficiency and reduce the chance of occupational injury for nurse aids. In this study, we did the related literature review, observed interaction between nurse aids and the elderly during dressing process and learned about the psychological state through interviews. We observed the nursing home under Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital Tainan Branch, Taiwan. We designed two new elderly clothes that can raise nurse aid’s efficiency and reduce injury with two different methods independently, one is Morphological Analysis (design A) and the other is Co-design (design B). Design A uses Velcro to join fabric to reduce the time nurse aids spend on finding cords. Design B is a one-piece cloth which wear from front in order to reduce unnecessary rotate of joint. We conduct a study for testing the dressing time to assess the new elderly clothes with the original clothing. The results showed that either in put on or take off stage, original clothing spent more time than design A and B, furthermore, design B spend less time than design A. By interview nurse aids, we knew design A is much better than the clothing nursing home

(11)

used (original clothing) because of time-saving. But the shortage of Velcro is it will take time to separate them when they stick together. About design B, one-piece really save a lot of time than two-pieces. But it should care more about elderly’s perception, sense of security and exposure, especially for the heavy elderly. The way for wearing design B is much better than others because it replaces extension of humerus with flexion, the elderly only need to raise their hands in the front. In the future, we should care more about psychology when we do elderly clothing design related research.

․ Biomechanical evaluation of patient handling jobs in healthcare: A case study in India:

Abstract:

In the majority of the worksystems in manufacturing organizations, human-machine interactions play key role in ensuring acceptable system performance in today’s industrial context. In many instances of material handling of jobs, human labour remains the principal components contributing to overall performance. Such a condition calls for a structured and scientific ergonomic evaluation of the material handling jobs that the operators perform so that any loading conditions, body motions or postures assumed by the operators remain within the hazardous limits and guidelines set by competitive authorities. Different kinds of injuries (Cumulative Trauma Disorders, Repetitive Motion injuries, Musculoskeletal Disorders, etc.) are possible during material handling, depending upon its requirements. A methodological study has been carried out on the techniques related to the process of collecting data, measuring mechanical work capacity and other parameters, and then assessing the loads and moments on L5/S1 region by applying static, dynamic and special-purpose biomechanical models. The results as obtained clearly show the importance of such a study in biomechanical evaluation of the manual material handling jobs for identification of deficiencies in the design of material handling worksystems in healthcare and possible improved ergonomic design alternatives.

․ Caregiver centered transfer aid designed for home care needs:

Abstract:

In this study, an innovative transfer aid is proposed to respond to home care needs of ageing society.

The fact that longterm care demanders nowadays prefer to live with their families and friends indirectly results in the gradually increasing number of non-professional caregivers. The incidence of work related injuries of amateur caregivers will be higher than professional nurses. Among all of the nursing activities, patient handling (PH) is the most frequently reported injuries. It is not uncommon to see even the professional nurses getting hurt from transferring patients, not to mention the non-trained caregivers. One of the reasons is that they are not familiar with transfer aids, such as when and how to operate proper aids.

Accordingly, the operation of transfer aids for patient handling during home care must be reconsidered and redesigned. Activity theory and Contextual design were adopted in this paper to redesign the caregiver centered transfer aid.

․ Designing jobs that facilitate knowledge sharing: A network perspective:

Abstract:

This paper will present a case study from a population of design engineers in a multinational aerospace organization, based in the UK. The two key aims of the research are: 1. To understand the advice seeking behaviours of these engineers in their social networks, and how these operate in practice. 2. To spell out the implications of these behaviours, for individuals, organizations and for theories of job design. Seeking and sharing advice is a crucial part of knowledge sharing, which is vital in many 21st century organizations, and in particular engineering organizations. This paper will present data collected from a sample of design engineers, using a mixed-method approach. This will include: data from a social network questionnaire (n=160) capturing job crafting behaviours and social networks; interviews with a cross-section of questionnaire respondents (n=16); and follow-up questionnaire data on subsequent career progression (n=67). Finally, the paper will draw on these findings to propose a theoretical framework which will consider more broadly what we might expect ‘social’ job design to mean and deliver.

․ Microbiological digital analysis of hospital tissue coatings in high traffic hospital:

Abstract:

Nosocomial infections, also called nosocomial infections related to health care (IRAS), are defined as infections acquired by patients during treatment in health institutions, having its origin from the time of admission. These infections are the cause of many deaths, economic losses and structuring problems in health institutions. In Brazil, such infections are serious problems with rates of up to 40% mortality. In order to contribute with products that can somehow help prevent hospital infections, the Brazilian company Cavaletti S / A chair manufacturer of office investigated the presence of bacteria and fungi on their coats to seat used in a high-traffic hospital. In partnership a hospital located in southern Brazil were analyzed four models arranged seat coating three places of high movement of people, "center diagnostic and image," "ER"

and "laboratory". During the 30 day period, there were four collections are two previous and two subsequent cleaning cleaning. To verify that the difference found in the amount of bacteria, is statistically significant before and after cleaning was performed chi-square test. We found no statistically significant correlation between bacteria concentration in tissues and environmental factors such as temperature, humidity and

․ Augmented reality based social stories training system for promoting the social skills of adolescents with autism:

Abstract:

Profound social reciprocity deficits are a core feature of the autism spectrum disorders. Children with autism often lack appropriate social skills when they need to interact with other people. A social stories training is one type of children-specific intervention for teaching social skills. It helps learn social skills through combination of visual and verbal cues. We use augmented reality (AR) technologies to visually conceptualize the social stories. Interactive social stories are played using several tangible markers and AR technologies that overlays the markers with corresponding virtual images. The new way to interpret social stories demonstrates an improvement of attraction and enhances effects of social skills training. Finally, We have a prototype for the social skill – “greeting” and an initial pilot study to support the therapy of high- functioning autism children.

․ The app game interface design for frozen shoulder rehabilitation:

Abstract:

This paper aims to develop an appropriate game interface design for frozen shoulder rehabilitation.

The main treatment of frozen shoulder involves diagnose of doctor and proper rehabilitative exercise to break up adhesion and improve the joint mobility and functions. It leads to a problem that whether to do the exercise after the treatments of doctor is all depends on the patient’s motivation and often not execute.

To address this, we construct an app game design which can be easily used by mobile platforms in order to enhance the motivations of patients to keep doing regular rehabilitation at home and the results can be uploaded into server for screening by doctor. The prototyping of this game design are conducted and several users are invited into the evaluation process to revise the game design.

․ Interaction of haptics, acoustics, and optics in the perception of rotatory control devices:

Abstract:

Due to a new focus on holistic design and the development of new control devices in cars not only optical features but also haptic and acoustic factors are becoming more important. However, it is necessary to clarify if haptics, acoustics and backlights ofcontrols (optics) are independent factors and can thus be developed separately or if there are interactions between the perceptions of those three modalities. Thus, two independent studies were conducted. The first study investigated the interaction between haptics, acoustics and backlights of controls. Since backlight is not always present while a vehicle is being driven (e.g. insolation during daytime), a second study with a more detailed variation of acoustic and haptic parameters was conducted, omitting optics as a factor.

․ Conducting a prospective review for enhanced interface features for unmanned ground vehicle operation:

Abstract:

Improvements to a recently developed user interface for operation of an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) were evaluated by members of the research team using established methods for evaluating human error and user acceptance. The four enhanced interface features were all designed to improve operator awareness of the potential for collisions with environment features, in comparison to the video-only information generally available. Distinct enhancements were developed, based on established human-robot interaction literature, and evaluated by research team members individually. Distance indicator bars (1) were added to the upper left and right corners to provide color-coded cues to relative distance from objects in the environment. Virtual flippers (2) were added to the lower portion of the video feed to remind operators of the flippers’ presence on the UGV platform. Distance guidelines (3), similar to those used in some rear- view cameras in the automotive industry, were added as an overlay to the standard video feed. A virtual path (4) was overlaid over the video, including an optimal path and an alignment indicator.

․ Physiological responses related to visual impressions of a product: Evaluating automobile interior design:

Abstract:

Background Design evaluation of cars includes not only functional aspects such as safety and run characteristics but also a psychological aspect of the user, including the comfort in the car and the joy of owning it. Thus, appearance plays a major role. During the design process, manufacturers suggest various concepts (“ecological,” “luxurious,” etc.) according to needs of target users and today’s society, make multiple plans embodying them, and reach the final plan. During this evaluation, it is essential to determine whether users appreciate concepts intended by designers from the appearance of the embodied product.

However, the evaluation of a delicate psychological factor such as “impression” depends on the user’s

(18)

7th International Conference on Applied Human Factors and Ergonomics (AHFE 2016) and the Affiliated Conferences

subjective method (e.g., seven-method questionnaire), and there is no objective method to detect and quantify it. We aimed to establish a method to objectively detect the impression of appearance.

․ Design requirements to reduce discomfort in window viewing: Study on increasing degrees of freedom of car-body shape:

Abstract:

Background & Objectives In designing a product or service, the user experience (UX) has recently gained increasing importance and diversity. For cars, much of the UX relates to safety and comfort, so cars that meet such UX standards are required by customers. For the driver, UX elements include easy decision- making while driving and the ability to drive as wanted. Meanwhile, for the rear-seat passenger, the optimal UX includes decreased possibility of motion sickness and seat comfort. In this study, the UX element of decreasing the possibility of motion sickness for rear-seat passengers is discussed with respect to the designs of cars that meet this criterion. Motion sickness is caused by differences among information from the vestibular, visual, and bodily senses. Information from eyesight is thought to be affected by window curvature and blurring of sight. To design a product or service meeting a variety of UX criteria, higher degrees of freedom for the body shape provide more ease in designing a good product or service.

․ Acceptable physical attributes of wearable computing devices, based on human factors:

Abstract:

This study aimed to identify the acceptable range of physical attributes (form factors, weight, volume and contact area) of a wearable computing device (WCD) on different body areas, in relation to human factors. Human performance tests and interviews were conducted with 17 male and 24 female healthy participants, upon institutional review board approval. The participants evaluated the form factors (box, oval and foldable belt shapes) and the maximum acceptable weight and volume of a wearable computing device for eight selected areas of the body: front shirt pocket, front pant pocket, back pant pocket, front side of the waist, back side of the waist, forearm, upper arm, and collar area.

․ Acceptable physical attributes of wearable computing devices, based on human factors:

Abstract:

In addition to the functionality, wearing ease is also an important element for joint protective garment design. Besides, clothing fit is one of the important factors controlling the wearing ease. However, previous research in this area has been neither sufficient nor systematic. As elbow joint is one of the most strained joint of the body, the skin surface around it also has significant length change. Therefore, in this research an attempt has been made to analyze and quantify the length variations of skin surface around the elbow joint, and arrange a stretchable mesostucture on the base of these variations. 3D printing with its advantages of rapid manufacturing and design complexity than traditional textile industry, it is the method used for making the prototype in this study. Finally, an application for elbow brace design of the research results is suggested.

․ Development of a new information interface for elderly using vibrations:

Abstract:

Within the BUNDSCHUH-project granted by the German Ministry of Education and Research it is one aim to develop a new information interface for elderly. This interface should be applicable in shoes or soles. Over this interface users will give hints for their orientation and navigation. This will get a great benefit esp. for elder people with beginning dementia in new environments. This will happen when elder people have to leave their own living environments due to several pathological problems (dementia, typical geriatric diseases with need of permanent care). In order to get best results and acceptance and due to the knowledge from past projects we integrated the potential users from the first stage of development into each phase of the process. For this we made huge amount of group interviews as well as tests within their personal environment (in their own homes and in home care facilities). To know the type, amount and code of vibrational information given to a foot sole is necessary for a successful design and high level of user acceptance.

․ Systematic pattern code design on kitchenware for operable activities in tangible user interface:

Abstract:

In order to improve the convenience and entertaining of human lives, smart families are the representatives of extensive application of this technology. This research has developed a new way of operation using pattern codes to operate the tangible interface of kitchenware for a smart family environment. This new development controls products such as stereos and light switches using different utensil gestures. The pattern codes are required to be both recognizable by programs and to communicate the suggestions of operation to users. During the evaluation stage, the program recognizable rate tests and the subjective evaluation questionnaires were conducted respectively in order to evaluate the possibility of implementation of our pattern codes in tangible user interface.
