Why Should we study

Sunny Chi

hen you were a little child, did you ever ask your parents why you had to study? In fact, I never asked my parents this question. When I started my third year of junior high school, my homeroom teacher gave an article to our class entitled “Why Should We Study?” This article really made a big impression on me, and I believe that the reasons given in this article are useful for every exhausted, hardworking student. Although on the surface they may not seem that useful, I believe these ideas have influ-enced me deeply.

here are several reasons why we should study. First of all, although studying isn’t the only way to succeed, I think it’s the fastest way that we can achieve success. We may study so hard at times that we have the thought of giving up, but we shouldn’t worry about this problem because all of the teachers here are ready to help us. The knowledge and information that teachers impart to us are like the stepping stones that help us reach higher places. Our teachers are there to help us become better, not only in our academic knowledge but also in regard to our attitude toward life.

econd, we can learn more knowledge the more we study, and by doing so, we are less ignorant about the world around us. At the same time, however, we can realize that there is still so much to learn, and this realization can help keep us humble.

(4)

hird, studying is one of the best ways to help us better understand ourselves. We may have some idea about what goals we really want to pursue through reading class-related materials or by discussing issues with our classmates. These are great ways to learn more about the world. Although there are various reasons why we should study, I think the most important thing is that we should clearly know what we want in the future and what we are doing now to help us reach our goals. If we can know what our future plan is, we can have a clearer purpose for why we have to study. For example, if our goal is to get a job at a bank, we may have to focus more attention on our math skills and on some subjects related to finance and management. Then we can set more specific goals and have the motivation to study hard in order to achieve those goals. After figuring out what our aim is, then we just need to follow Nike’s slogan—“Just do it!”

hroughout our lives, we are faced with a lot of questions about why we have to do certain things. Why we should study is one of the biggest questions we face in life. I really appreciate my junior high school teacher for having us read that article which has greatly encouraged and influenced me from that time until now. Finally, I think that it’s import-ant to let students to know that we should study for ourselves, not for any-body else. Let’s do our best to develop our own future with strong passion.

s a student, how do you define success and what is the best way to become a successful student? Apparently, it doesn’t depend on who you are or how you look but on what you do. Following are a few ideas and tips on how to become a successful student. Studies show that successful students not only know how to focus on their studies but also understand how to have good time in life. This means that they can manage their time wisely, such as by

arranging their study schedule well and still have time to relax.

Furthermore, successful students can also maintain good relationships. If you want to become a successful student as well, the key traits that you must have are time management, active participation, and

self-discipline and determination.

irst, time management is such an important trait that can help enrich every area of your life. However, there are only 24 hours in a day, but students have to struggle with how to balance their studies with extracurricular activities, part-time jobs, etc. To work more efficiently, studying or reviewing class material a little each day can help you retain the information you need to recall later for an exam. In this way, you can save even more time so you can do something that you are interested in, such as mountain climbing, playing basketball, working part-time, and so on. Managing your time wisely can give you a more colorful life.

A

(7)

econd, active participation is a positive trait which can really make you get much more out of your learning experiences. For instance, having an active outlook attitude in your classes can help you better understand concepts you might have had questions about as well as make group projects or tasks go more smoothly. Moreover, it can help you learn more about related knowledge in various clubs and activities, and even enable you to develop wonderful relationships. Through active participation, you can receive more benefits than you can even imagine.

ast but not least, self-discipline and determination are indispensable traits in achieving success. Self-discipline is the ability to concentrate on aims which you want to accomplish and then work hard to attain them so as to reap the resulting benefits. As students, we need to be dedicated to achieving our objectives, and gaining self-discipljne can help us implement our goals and projects more efficiently. Determination plays an essential role in achieving success. It has the potential power to help us face our problems and bravely overcome our difficulties. Both qualities are the keys that will enable you to access the road to success.

o sum up, in addition to such practical things as being punctual, taking notes, and paying close attention in class, time management, active participation, and self-discipline and determination will go a long way toward helping you reach your objectives. As an old saying goes, “You reap what you sow.” Gradually implementing these strategies into your academic life step by step will put you well on the way toward becoming a successful student!

on Studying in china

ith the rise of overseas education, it’s common for students to change the

methods in which they learn. If you are a student suffering from the stress

of school, studying abroad might be an alternative choice for you.

ecently, it has become more popular to do further studies abroad, especially

in China. With its bountiful resources, many students consider China an

ideal destination. In addition, with the rapid development of its economy,

China is appealing to those who want to study in a better environment. Obviously,

the economic rise of China has made those who can speak Chinese, the second

most widely spoken language in the world now, or want to have an unforgettable

experience living in China, obtain great advantages in the future. As a result, not

only Taiwanese students but also students from around the world desire to study in

China. Thus, by studying abroad you can meet many people from around the world,

and you will find yourself opening your eyes not just to China but to the whole

world.

oreover, China is striving to set up more world-class universities and culti

vate its higher education. Take the Programme for International Student

Assessment, or PISA, as an example. Shanghai, one of the most bustling

cities in China, was ranked number one in the world in 2009. Apparently, this result

speaks for itself.

ince Taiwan is just next to China and we share much of the same culture

and the same language and therefore don’t have those barriers, I think

studying in China is a second-to-none choice for Taiwanese students. It

would definitely broaden your horizons. To sum up, life is always full of surprises

just waiting to be discovered. You will receive something wonderful in return for

your effort. Hey, if you are physically and mentally ready, go and explore this

glori-ous planet of ours and see for yourself just how beautiful the world is.

ach of us has had a wide variety of experiences in our lives. When we recall our experiences, whether bitter or sweet, most likely those memories still give us more joy than sorrow. Because of those experiences, we have become the people who we are today.

hen I was sixteen years old, my high school announced that some students from the United States would come to visit. Therefore, my school needed some students to welcome and host these guests. One of my friends and I were about to have an English interview for the college entrance exam. Since neither one of us had any previous interview experience, we decided not to let this great chance to practice speak-ing English slip away. As soon as we signed up as poten-tial volunteers, we listed every possible question that those students might ask, and practiced asking and

answering them with each other as frequently as possible. When the day for the students’ arrival came, both of us showed confidence and literally told the teachers how we prepared and how we would introduce our school. A few days later, we shouted with joy when we heard that both of us were selected to welcome the guest students.

e

(12)

hen those American students visited our school, I had a really great time with them. Not only did I introduce our school’s special courses, such as flower arrange-ment and tea drinking etiquette, but I also gained knowledge about their education system along with their amazing life

experiences which were very different from ours. One girl named Michelle told me that it was hard for her when she first moved to America when she was eight years old. Not only did she struggle to learn an unfamiliar language but also felt lonely after leaving Taiwan to grow up in a strange country. I learned that most of them were originally from Taiwan but due to their parents’ jobs or for some other reason, they emigrated to America. They could speak only a little Chinese but after many years in America, they had forgotten most of the Chinese they did know. They wanted to practice with us during their visit. As a result, in our conversa-tion, we used both English and Chinese to communicate with each other which was a weird but funny situation.

rom this experience, I learned that as long as you have the courage to step out of your comfort zone, the benefits you gain will be far beyond your imagination. I used to be the kind of girl who would shy away from others, and so I always thought that I couldn’t interact well with others. However, when I made up my mind to give myself a chance, I knew I could make a positive change. If it hadn’t been for this chance, I never would have made friends with these wonderful students from the United States. Without a doubt, this experience was one of the greatest in my high school life.

o Longer Human is a classical Japanese novel written by 太

宰治 (Dazai Osamu). It’s one of the most famous works of Japanese literature and has been widely read. In 2010, it was made into a movie bearing the same title and stars 生田斗真 (Ikuta Toma) whose acting skills have been highly praised because of this movie. No Longer Human is a rare example of a movie based on a novel being as highly acclaimed as the original. However, although the movie focuses mostly on one of the most beautiful sections of the novel, it is still worth watching.

azai Osamu was a novelist who supported 无頼派, a poetry faction established by a group of anti-authority and anti-mo rality writers. The article “逆行” from the book “晚年”, which was written by Dazai Osamu, was one of the books considered for the 芥川龍之介賞, the biggest prize for Japanese literature. After completing his novel No Longer Human when he was 39 years old, both he and a passionate female fan tragically committed suicide.

庭叶蔵 (Ooba Youzou), the protagonist in the novel No

Longer Human, understands the sorrow of this pathetic

world but also realizes he has no power to change it. Ooba Youzou begins to fear human beings and tries to hide his “real” self making fun of himself and acting like a cheerful person who is good at getting along with others. His precocious behavior makes everyone around him pleased. Simultaneously, however, he is continually afraid of being found out regarding his true feelings, so he eventually falls into despair, suffering from depression and loneliness.

fter befriending 堀木正雄 (Tera Jima), Ooba Youzou becomes addicted to alcohol, women and drugs. He even tries to commit suicide several times, first by jumping into the sea and later by swallowing sleeping pills several times. At the end of the story, he struggles from his drug addiction and from with-drawal symptoms when he tries to stop, but eventually is sent to a hospital and then transferred to a mental hospital after overdosing on morphine.

N

d

(15)

oba Youzou doesn’t feel love for any ordinary woman because he thinks that only relationships with hookers are pure, because one doesn’t have to consider the pros and cons of such a relationship. Most female characters in No Longer

Human tend to ignore his personality and inner feelings, but always

desire to look after him. Perhaps this is because Youzou is physically attractive and because he is quick to show his weak side. Just like Ooba Youzou, Dazai Osamu, the author of No Longer Human, also experienced depression and guilt in his life and saw no purpose for his existence.

ost people see Dazai Osamu as a self-destructive person because of his anxiety and depression over his problems. However, only when a person gives too much love to others and makes himself/herself vulnerable does that person become afraid of fellow human beings. If you have very high expectations about something but can’t get what you want, you feel extremely disap-pointed. Before writing No Longer Human, Osamu attempted but failed to commit suicide again. However, the woman who tried to kill herself along with Dazai Osamu tragically succeeded. After that, Osamu seemed to give up on his desire to live and decided to write

No Longer Human as a way to confess his sins to the whole world. At

least he had the courage to speak out.

ompared to Osamu’s works, most other writers express a more positive attitude toward the world and about their lives through their writings, with some going so far as to claim the moral high ground over other “normal” people. The implied message in No Longer Human is that it’s possible to lose oneself to the point that it disqualifies him/her from being rendered a “human being.” To me, however, Osamu was the only one who truly under-stood what it means to be human.

ccording to Aviation Safety Network, there are 761 people died in airplane crashes in 2014. A well-knownfamous airplane accident is that took place on January 15, 2009 was that of US Airways Flight 1549 was flight on January 15 2009.. The captain, Sully, was forced to make an emergency landinged on New York’s Hudson River after a seriousbecause the birds strike knocked out and wrecked the plane’s engines. Fortunately, everyone on board survived. The “Miracle on the Hudson” succeeded because of Captain Sully’sthe 40 years of flying experience of Sully and thehis correct deci-sion he made. Air plane accidents and crashes happened every year all over the world, butand not every crash has as happy an ending as what the “Miracle on the Hudson” had. Some people blame aviation accidents on the pilots, but is it right to place all the rebuke on the pilots? I don’t think that it is right to put all the blame on the captains, because no one wants to risk his/her life in a terrible crash.

he major reason whys I amwould like to discussing this issue is becausethat air crashes hap pened due to a wide varietykinds of reasons. To begin with, the accidents is happened randomly, and we don’t know what will happen from one moment to theed next second. We usually have little or no time to react to athe dangerous situation in a very short time. Even Ccaptain Sully took justspend 208 seconds to decide to make an emergencyforced landinged on the Hudson River. I believe that every pilot would do his/her will make their best in any emergency situation to avoidof an accident. Although air traffic controllers inFurthermore, the control tower also have a hugethe responsibility to safely guidethe planes, pilots sometimes need to act on their experience and instincts he manage. In the Miracle on the Hudson, the control tower commandedcommend the captain to return to the airport imme-diately. However, ifIf Sully didn’t react based on his experience, but onlyto followed the air traffic controller’s instructions, a serious (and likely fatal) the air crash almost certainly would have must occurredhappened seriously. Finally, allevery pilots want to do their best to save not only their own lives but also those of their passengers and, crew members, and their own life certainly. When US Airways Flight 1549 the planecrash water landed on the Hudson River, Sully and his crew members quickly evacuated every passenger and got thems to safety on the lifeboat. Sully was the last person to leaveleft the plane because he wanted to make sure no one was left behind on the plane. After Sully knew that-know all of his passengers and crew members wereare safe, he finallycan went to the hospital.

o sum up, it is not rightcorrect to always blame an airplane mishapall the thing on the pilot. After all, everybody, included pilots, cherish their own lives life. Everyone on board US Airways Flight 1549 survived because the Ccaptain Sully made the right decision. When you see a news report aboutsaw an air crash on television, try to think twice and know for certain thatmore believe the captain did his/hermake their best in the midst of a tense situation to save lives.

No nuclear power plants

Lisa wu

吳婉綺

ue to technological development, nuclear energy is widely used in our country. People not only in Taiwan but also throughout the world have benefited from nuclear power and from the conveniences it brings us. Although nuclear power reduces our

dependence on fossil fuels and doesn’t cause air pollution, there are still some disadvantages of and opposing viewpoints about nuclear power.

irst of all, nuclear waste is comprised of radioactive substances that can be harmful to our health. Hence, the safe disposal of nuclear waste is a major problem. Everyone knows that our government stores a significant amount of nuclear waste on Lanyu Island. For many years, the inhabitants of Lanyu have been protesting this policy. After all, no one wants to live beside nuclear waste,

including government officials. Even if nuclear wastes are disposed of safely in storage facilities, they still emit radiation into the environment.

nother reason why I think nuclear power plants shouldn’t be built in Taiwan is because they release a great amount of heat into our environment as well as cause serious damage to the ecosystem. Coral bleaching is one of the biggest problems caused by heat pollution. To reduce the high temperatures produced by nuclear power plants, it is necessary to use an abundance of cold water. The resulting hot water spewed into the sea doesn’t contain toxins, but it leads to coral bleaching which in turn seriously damages the ecosystem.

A

F

(20)

he most important reason why I think we shouldn’t have nuclear power plants is because Taiwan is located on a seismic bfault line in Asia’s Ring of Fire. It is not suitable to build a nuclear power plant in this area. According to data produced by the World Nuclear Association, Taiwan’s nuclear power plants are at the high risk level because the continental plates near Taiwan are unstable. Taiwan has a lot of earthquakes every day, but we still can’t accurately predict when they will strike and their magnitude. Take Fukushima as an example of the dangers of living near a nuclear power plant in an earthquake-prone area. The people near this the nuclear power plant have suffered greatly from the nuclear pollution caused by the reactor’s meltdown following the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in 2010 and which still affects their water and environment. They have been unable to go back home even until now because of the severe pollution caused by nuclear radiation. If a terrible earthquake suddenly strikes, can anyone predict how significant the damage would be or how the destruction of a nuclear power plant would affect people’s lives?

here is no doubt that nuclear power is a major contribution to our society. However, we haven’t found an effective way to deal with the problems it causes. Although more people are using alternative forms of energy such as solar, wind, and biomass energy instead of nuclear energy, the amount of energy these alternative forms produce isn’t enough to meet the growing demand. Therefore, we should reduce our use of and dependence on nuclear energy. For instance, our government could set up a reward system and give discounts to

customers with lower electric bills to encourage people to save energy. In that way, our electricity needs will decrease and also minimize our need for nuclear power, giving us all safer and healthier lives.

the secret to happiness

eileen lin

林季賢

hat is happiness? There is no particular answer. Happiness is “a state of well-being and

contentment,” according to Merriam Webster’s Dictionary. From my perspective,

happiness is a state of mind. In other words, the real source of happiness lies within the

mind rather than in external circumstances. A person can have everything in the world and still

feel miserable; conversely, a person can have relatively little but still possess unbounded joy.

f course, different people define happiness in a zillion different ways. There is no

denying that every one of us wants joy, happiness and life satisfaction. The problem is

most people are looking in all the wrong places, such as in the title of their job, the

number in their bank account, the success of their relationships, or the power they yield over

others. On the other hand, some people might attain their greatest contentment and feel happiest

when they are surrounded by their loved ones and by the kindness, care, and love they receive

from them. That is also true in some ways.

owever, if we look carefully, we will see that happiness is all about ourselves. Like the

Dalai Lama has noted, we have tried so hard to surround ourselves with those people

and things that we are comfortable with and that make us feel secure and inspired. Yet,

many people never find pure and lasting happiness if they are obsessed with the belief that

without having some particular thing or person, they cannot be happy. As for myself, helping

others makes me the most happy. Many friends of mine come to ask me to help them with their

emotional problems. Whenever I can help solve someone’s problem, I feel very happy.

Basically, I think the key is that it is better to give than to receive.

n short, if we want to be happy, we need to explore our inner selves which is a process

of discovering who we are and who we want to be. To find true happiness, we should

enjoy doing more of what we love and share that with others as much as possible. Once

we are filled with happiness, we will be better able to bring happiness to the rest of the world.

This is the secret to my happiness.

ometimes late at night I get hungry, but I am too lazy to go outside to buy something to

eat. But that’s alright because I can make a perfect nighttime snack by myself. My favor

ite food is eggs, so the snack I most like to make is chawanmush, also commonly called

steamed eggs or egg custard. Even if my mom and dad are asleep, I can still make this delicious

snack myself—it just takes a few easy steps.

Ingredients:

1)

2 eggs

2)

Water (200 cc.)

3)

Salt (2 grams)

4)

A little soy sauce

Directions:

irst, prepare a small bowl and two eggs. Crack open the eggs, put them into the bowl,

then stir them carefully with a spoon or with chopsticks. Then use a drainer to strain the

eggs. By the way, the leftover part of the eggs can be made into omelets, so don’t throw

it away! Second, add water (about twice the amount of the eggs) into the bowl, and then mix the

eggs and water thoroughly. After that, put the bowl into a cooker. Pour two rice cups of water

outside of the bowl in the cooker, and just turn it on to cook! Remember to put a lid on the bowl,

otherwise the egg custard will have many holes in it and will have a bad appearance. After the

cooker beeps, check to see if the egg custard is finished. If it is not cooked enough, put it back

into the cooker and cook it once more. If you like, you can add foods such as shrimp, vegetables,

and small pieces of meat, clams or oysters to it. Or, if you prefer, you can add some spices such as

pepper or soy sauce. After it finishes cooking, you can enjoy your delicious egg custard.

think this recipe can easily be followed by anyone. If you are hungry at midnight and

there is no shop open outside, you can make this dish on your own. OK, now that you

know how to do it, try making this yummy Japanese chawanmush yourself, then sit back

and enjoy your own homemade snack!

en-year-old Melissa, along with the help of her older sister, drafted an online petition in 2014. She asked her favorite doll company and children’s book publishing company, American Girl, to create a contemporary story about a main character who is physically challenged in its next book.

Unfortunately, American Girl did not make her dream come true, so the sisters decided to do it themselves. They wrote Mia Lee Wheels Through Middle School and published it in July of 2016. The main character, Mia Lee, and Melissa have two things in common—they both are in wheelchairs and they both share a love for making stop-motion videos. Melissa is now 13 years old. She wants to see characters with challenges similar to her own in children’s books and, most important of all, not to be misrepresented. She wants those characters to be lead roles who can offer encouragement rather than just be figures who only receive

kindness and assistance from others because she believes children with physical challenges can be heroes as well.

merican Girl indeed does not feature physically-challenged girls as main characters in its current story collection. However, back in 2012, it had a book that had a physically-challenged girl in it. Although she was not the protagonist, she definitely played an important role in the story. The story was about a ten-year-old gymnast named Mckenna who was so great at gymnastics but was behind in her schoolwork. Her teacher assigned a smart girl named Josie to be her ‘tutor’ in the hopes that Mckenna could get better grades with Josie’s help. Josie had physical disabilities that kept her bound to a wheelchair. At first, Mckenna doubted Josie’s ability to tutor her just because she was in a wheelchair. As time went by, they surprisingly started to like each other more and eventually became good friends. Mckenna found both differences and similarities between her and Josie. Josie was different because she used a wheelchair, yet she was still a young girl who did what typical girls that age do. Josie’s ability to teach, as well as the reading tips she offered her, wowed Mckenna. She genuinely adored Josie. Later, Mckenna helped Josie overcome her fears of going horseback riding as a form of therapy. This story is a very good example of how people with physical challenges can be portrayed in a positive light in children’s books. Both girls had difficulties that they helped each other with. Most importantly, they treated each other as equals.

ncluding children with physical challenges in children’s books is urgently needed. Those with disabilities will not feel left out when they read them, while those without any disabilities can learn about both differences and similarities between themselves and those with disabilities. Children may not often encounter people who are vastly different from them. However, if they learn the true facts about them from children’s books, they will respond more appropriately (and respectfully) when they meet one.

a man of courage and Love

hat is love? In fact, acts of love take place around us every single day. When you walk down a street and get a random compliment from a stranger, that is one expression of love. When a person gets a warm hug from his/her lover or partner, we see that as a romantic expression of love. A lady who gives a homeless person a warm supper and hot chocolate milk on a freezing night is another way to express kindhearted love. In all of the above-mentioned scenarios, such expressions of love make people feel happy and touched. Pope Francis, the epitome of love and a “savior” to a lot of people around the world, literally shows love to others in all of the above-mentioned ways.

love rooted in compassion, respect, understanding and hope for all people is some thing that Pope Francis both embraces and expresses wherever he goes. The 911 memorial held in New York City was an event where Pope Francis displayed love and warmth. He demonstrated true concern for the common and poor people who were in need of economic assistance. He is a man who chooses to be with the homeless rather than dine with politicians. He is also a man who expresses gratitude whether he is addressing the General Assembly of the United Nations, speaking to security personnel, or just chatting with chefs who have helped make a fantastic conference possible. At 78 years of age, he still travels tirelessly around the world to continually serve people. Nothing holds him back from visiting and showing love to some of society’s most unlovable people, such as notorious criminals held in prisons. So courageous is Pope Francis that he is able to bring together people of different faiths and unite them together or at least find common ground among them on some important social issue.

espite the fact that Pope Francis holds to a religious faith different from that of many people, he still treats everybody equally and faithfully. In order to change the world, we need to change ourselves first. As Pope Francis has famously stated, “We cannot give peace to people if we don’t have peace in ourselves to give in the first place.”

s a general rule, I prefer reading books to watching movies. Therefore, unless my friends invite me to go out or unless I have an interesting novel to read, I seldom watch movies.

owever, one day I had a little free time so I watched the Korean film Train to Busan. The reason why I want to write about this

particular movie is because it is the only one I have seen that has left me with a feeling of shock after watching it. The 2-hour movie was so captivating that I didn’t feel tired the entire time while watching it. It portrayed many ignoble acts of humanity and human nature throughout the plot.

o some people, Train to Busan may just be nothing more than a horror movie that is full of creepy zombies running around biting people for no reason. But to me, I had a very strong feeling after watching it. I think this movie is imbued with selfish-ness—the main theme. Every character’s personality, as seen through his/her interactions with the other characters, is portrayed meticulously through the director’s professional skills. The most infamous character is disliked by all. However, after he turned into a zombie and said that he just wanted to go home and see his mother, it struck me that this villain was just striving for a normal life like the rest of the characters. In other words, villains are not always as evil as moviegoers might expect. Hence, can a person with selfishness, inhumane behavior, and hateful thoughts be deemed evil simply because he wants to survive just to see his or her family again?

A

h

(31)

he separation of the father and daughter is so heartbreaking that the love and guilt he feels toward his daughter leads to pure and bright memories at the end of the story.

he song about rebirth inspired me to review the characters in this movie. However, the plot was so fast-moving that I didn’t have enough time to contemplate each character deeply or consider which one I identify more closely with.

onetheless, I like the tramp the most. He is a person with a kind heart. In spite of his ragged clothing and non-eye catching appearance, he sacrificed himself to save a little girl and a pregnant woman. In contrast to the other more selfish characters, the tramp’s selfless act of sacrifice was truly touching. The part where the pregnant woman and little girl walked through the dark tunnel was espe-cially moving and left me with the impression that it’s possible for people with a kind and pure heart to emerge through the evilness and selfishness witnessed in wars and disasters. Such images can give us much hope and meaning in life.

highly recommend that everyone see this movie. If you watch this movie simply for entertainment, you may think it is of little significance. On the other hand, if you put on your emotional glasses, you will view it in a totally different light!
