Since January 2001, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) has been calculated using October 1999 to September 2000 as the base period. The consumption pattern has been derived from the Household Budget Survey 98/99. In this CPI series, housing rent includes both private and welfare housing. Furthermore, CPI(A) represents 54% of the households with an average monthly expenditure of MOP3,000 to MOP9,999 and CPI(B) accounts for 26% of the households with an average monthly expenditure of MOP10,000 to MOP19,999.

Composite CPI of February 2004 was 93.60, a slight increase of 0.01% over the previous month. Due to rising prices in fresh vegetables, fish and other seafood, fruit and the price increase in eggs caused by the impact of bird flu found in the neighbouring areas, coupled with the salary increase of domestic helpers, the indices of

FOODSTUFFS AND BEVERAGES and HOUSEHOLD GOODS rose 1.38% and 1.36% respectively. On the

other hand, falling prices in hairdressing, outbound package tours and air fares after the Lunar New Year, led to significant decreases in the indices of OTHER GOODS AND SERVICES (-4.67%) and TRANSPORT AND

COMMUNICATIONS (-1.65%).

Composite CPI fell 0.39% in February 2004 compared with the same month of 2003. The annual rate of change of the Composite CPI ending in February 2004 decreased 1.39%, yet the decline has narrowed since October 2002. The Composite CPI for the period between January and February 2004 also dropped 0.65% compared with the same period of 2003.

CPI(A) and CPI(B) increased 0.39% and 0.02% respectively compared with January 2004.
