Today, thousands of people can do things they never thought possible. Some people fly. Others talk to hundreds of strangers in a foreign language without ever feeling nervous. Some even grow tails or other strange body parts. Well, not really. People aren’t actually growing tails or flying, but their avatars are.

What’s an avatar? It’s an online representation of a person. Many websites and video games allow players to use avatars for a more personal experience. With avatars, users can see - and control – themselves in a digital world. Users can also choose what they’re going to look like in that world. For example, Nintendo’s Wii allows players to create their own “Miis,” or cartoon-like representations or themselves. Players then can use their Miis to play games or interact with other players.

Using avatars can make playing and learning more fun. With this in mind, a company in the U.S., Tabula Digita, has created popular video games that allow kids aged 3 to 12 to use avatars to learn math skills. Each student first creates his or her own avatar. Then the student uses the avatar to explore a virtual world within one of the games. In each game, the student’s goal is to move his or her avatar along a complicated route. At different places, the student must solve a math problem before going further. Students earn points for every problem they solve and get a final score when they finish. Teachers receive a report showing each student’s progress and the skills the student has learned.

The evil reputation of bats is easy to understand. These creatures have been accused of attacking humans and carrying infectious diseases. The fact that they sleep during the day and fly at night also adds to their mystery. However, bats do not attack humans. Actually, there are more deaths each year from pet dog attacks and bees than from bats.

Bats perform an important ecological function throughout the world. They eat millions of harmful insects yearly. In fact, the food a bat eats every night amounts to one quarter of its own body weight. A single colony of Arizona bats observed by scientists eat up to 35,000 pounds of insects every night. That’s the equivalent weight of 34 elephants!

Bats may soon disappear from the world. For one thing, they are fast losing their natural homes—

caves, abandoned mines, certain kinds of trees. Bats are also in danger from certain chemicals used by farmers to fight destructive insects. Scientists have found that in the State of Arizona alone, the number of

(5)

bats has declined from 30 million to 30,000 over the past six years.

Many people kill bats out of unreasonable fear. Said one bat expert, “The most critical need for bat conservation today is increased public awareness and education.”

48.According to this passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?

(A) Pet dogs are more dangerous than bats.

(B) Bats are often considered mysterious animals.

(C) Many people still find bats fearsome.

(D) In Arizona, bats eat 35,000 pounds of insects every night.

49. Which statement best describe the main idea of this selection?

(A) Bats are harmful to human beings.

(B) Bats are becoming an endangered species.

(C) Bats are frightening and destructive creatures.

(D) The prejudice against bats is well-grounded.

50. What suggestion is given in this passage to protect bats from dying out?

(A) Helping them to find new homes.

(B) Using chemicals to kill insects.

(C) Making the public learn more about bats.

(D) Providing them with more insects.
