How to promote young children’s language
development through joint story book reading
Shu-Min Chen*
Abstract
By using literature analysis methods, this study explores how to guide young children to read storybooks to enhance children’s language development. The discussion can provide early childhood professionals with teaching reference resources.
Early reading was related to the achievement of later literacy development. Some studies showed that the frequency of parent-child joint book-reading was related to the reading achievement in the future. However, some studies revealed that it was not the frequency but the way of adult-child joint book-reading that influenced reading achievement.
Research has shown that vocabulary and verbal expressive abilities of children under age three, could be enhanced through adults’ reading guidance, which included asking open-ended questions, following children’s answers to ask questions,
expanding children’s answers, encouraging children’s performance, following children’s interest, and encouraging children to enjoy reading’s funs. Vocabulary and reading comprehension abilities can be improved through adult’s reading
guidance, which included analyzing characters or events, predicting incoming events, defining vocabulary, summarizing texts, clarifying comments of story, and evaluating responses to the story.
