Helen Keller

Read the text below and answer the following questions.

Helen Keller was born in 1880 as a healthy child. When she was just over a year old, she became very ill and it changed her life forever. She had “Brain Fever” that made her both deaf and blind.

As a young child, Helen acted more like an animal than a little girl. Helen’s mind was clear and active, but nobody knew how to talk to her and she felt very lonely.

When Helen was seven years old, a woman named Anne Sullivan came to her parents and offered to help.

Anne was a teacher from a school for the blind, and she not only taught there, but also went there as a child. Her first job at the school for the blind was to teach Helen, and she held this job for the next 50 years of her life.

Anne taught Helen the alphabet and that everything had a name. She did this by writing signs on the palm of Helen’s hand. She also taught Helen to read and write using a “Braille typewriter.” Braille is a system of writing that uses dots for letters and words. You can read these dots by feeling them with your fingers.

By learning how to read and write, Helen could now share her life with her family and friends, but she still couldn’t speak. One of the hardest things for Helen to learn was how to talk out loud. This was hard for Helen, because she couldn’t hear anything and didn’t know how to say any of the words. After much hard work, Helen finally learned how to speak out loud and was the first blind and deaf person to go to college. Helen spent the rest of her life helping other blind, deaf, and disabled people. She even traveled to other countries and worked with injured soldiers. She is known best for the books she wrote and the hope she gave to people with disabilities all around the world.
