在
巴伯的十二首合唱作品中，無伴奏四聲部的《輪迴》是唯一以組曲形式呈現的 合唱曲，就研究者尋找到的有聲出版品就高達十三種，在網路影音上高中大學團的現場 演出也為數甚多，是二十世紀美國合唱的經典作品。研究者希望藉由對《輪迴》的研究，可以讓更多台灣的演出團體認識其經典價值，進而推廣演出。
1939 年巴伯受寇蒂斯音樂院老師湯普森的邀請，回母校指導剛成立的牧歌團，除了 擔任指揮也為其創作。他從愛爾蘭詩人史蒂芬斯的蓋爾語再創詩集《輪迴》中，挑選三 首分別表達愛、失去、與渴望之內涵情感的〈瑪莉．海恩斯〉、〈安東尼．歐．達利〉
與〈庫林〉的詩詞來創作合唱曲。
《輪迴》三首歌有著截然不同的風格，依歌詞而形成迥異的曲風。第一首〈瑪莉．
海恩斯〉描述一位愛爾蘭傳說中的女孩，作曲家以快速的仿說話節奏及聲部對位的兩段 式曲式來描繪文字中的驚喜與迷戀，譜號雖為Ｃ大調，卻使用半音升降及和聲音不重複 等手法來刻意模糊調性。曲中更展現巴伯對歌詞的理解，善用作曲手法如音畫、主複音 織體變化、誇飾的力度變化、節拍與節奏音值的變換來捕捉詩韻與情境。
第二首〈安東尼．歐．達利〉哀悼一位愛爾蘭民族英雄之死，以主題旋律反覆所構 成的不同調式和自然小音階為主，素材少但加以變化延伸貫穿全曲，將所要表達的情感 不斷往前堆疊加深，加上同時使用頑固低音，多種特徵都與極簡主義的理念非常相似。
對稱或不對稱的卡農設計與歌詞「安東尼」的各種呼喊，搭配男低音的沉重步伐，使此

處在於〈瑪莉．海恩斯〉在聲音技巧上要求較高，適合追求專業表現的團隊，相對而言，
〈安東尼．歐．達利〉與〈庫林〉較適合國內的大專團與業餘團，但在排練時需要增加 聲音上的訓練以正確詮釋音樂。
無伴奏合唱作品是合唱表演及訓練的重點，不論歐美或亞洲當代的合唱團，皆非常 重視無伴奏曲目的創作及演出。美國身為二十世紀合唱發展的重要國家，在多元衝擊的 環境下，作曲家們紛紛尋求自我獨立之風格，其中以巴伯為代表人物之一。巴伯的無伴 奏合唱組曲《輪迴》運用獨特的節拍節奏、調性與調式的運用、主複音織體的變換，將 音樂與文學完美結合，成為美國合唱經典作品。此作品在台灣曾被合唱團以全套組曲或 單曲的形式演出。研究者希望藉由對《輪迴》三首樂曲的分析與詮釋，讓國內合唱團更 深一層的認識與接觸此經典之作，並提供排練時的參考與幫助，使這部作品能成為台灣 合唱訓練之教材與演出曲目的選擇。
