HKUST IdeasLab showcases emerging technologies’ changes to human
experience at World Economic Forum “Summer Davos”

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) offered a glimpse into how human experience would be enhanced by emerging technologies at the Annual Meeting of the New Champions of the World Economic Forum, widely known as the “Summer Davos”, in September in Tianjin, China.Officiated by Premier Li Keqiang,more than 1,500 political and community leaders, academics, experts and global entrepreneurs from over 90 countries and regions engaged to address the challenge of technological advance presented and discuss how innovation can generate better value to society under this year’s theme, “Creating Value through Innovation”.
For the third consecutive year, HKUST was the only university in Hong Kong invited and it was the third time in a row there was a specifically named HKUST IdeasLab in the forum. Led by Dr Eden Woon, Vice-President for Institutional Advancement, an expert team shined light on the latest innovation’s impact on human experience in physical, cognitive and social areas. Dr Woon said the University was honored to be invited and to share its researchstrengths at theIdeasLab again. “Emerging technologies have brought revolutionary transformation to human experience in different realm and scale that there are new potentials and challenges given the evolving needs of the society,” he added.
At the HKUST IdeasLab, four professors from the University presented their breakthrough ideas and interacted with internationally renowned scholars and experts on the subject “How are emerging technologies augmenting the human experience?”. Shared with the earnest audience, Prof Zexiang Li, Professor of Electronic and Computer Engineering, revealed how robotics technology could be moved from laboratories to products and deployment in the society. Prof Fugee Tsung, Professor and Head of Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management, explored the challenges and possible business opportunities of 3D printing in the coming five years. Prof Dekai Wu, Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, examined the world of computational linguistics and its impact on human communication. Prof Qian Zhang, Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, illustrated the application of the Internet of Things in healthcare industry. Two HKUST alumni also joined the University to interact with global leaders during this year’s forum.
Summer Davos was conceived by Prof Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum and Mr Wen Jiabao, China’s former Premier. Starting from 2007, the forum has been held annually in China, with the venue alternating between Tianjin and Dalian. The annual event fosters closer cooperation and better ideas exchange on key global agenda among global leaders, cities and technology pioneers from around the world.
