[C] What comes to your mind at the thought of autumn? Changeable weather and falling leaves? For Americans, they tend to associate the season with pumpkins, a simple fruit that 41 symbolize all that is important and meaningful about the harvest season. The pumpkin’s appearance at roadside stands 42 the beginning of autumn. Soon afterwards, they make up the theme of decorations for holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving. Thus, one will not be surprised to find out there are pumpkin festivals 43 all across America every autumn.

In fact, there’s more to the pumpkin than just being a nice and warm image of the season. Rich in vitamins and minerals, it is considered a healthy 44 one’s diet. While having a high nutritional value, the pumpkin is of great practical use for people of all times. None of the uses, however, is as amusing as the way it was used by the 18th-century New Englanders. Back then, men had their hair cut with the pumpkin shell placed on their head as a guide. [A] I was telling my son Johnny the story of the hare and the tortoise. At the end I said. “Son, remember slow and steady wins the race. Don’t you think there’s something to learn from the tortoise?”

He opened his eyes wide. “Do you mean next time when I’m entering for the 1500 meter race, I should wish that Bill and Tony and Marty would all fall asleep halfway?”

I was shocked. “But the tortoise didn’t wish the hare would fall asleep.” “He must have wished that,” Johnny said. “Otherwise how could he be so stupid as to race with the hare? He knew very well the hare ran a hundred times faster than he himself did.”

“He didn’t have such a wish,” I insisted. “He won the race by perseverance, by pushing on steadily.” Johnny thought for a while. “That’s a lie,” he said. “He won it because he was lucky. If the hare hadn’t happened to fall asleep, the tortoise would never have won the race. He could be as steady as you like, or a hundred times steadier, but he would never have won the race! That’s for sure.”

I gave up. Today’s children are not like what we used to be.

[B] Women in beautiful red and black costumes with feathered headdresses dance joyfully with men in traditional black skirts. The simple dance steps and repetitive melodies of the music are fascinating, and as everyone joins hands and moves in a circle, the feeling of togetherness is unmistakable. Young and old come together to show respect to their ancestors and appreciation to the gods for a successful harvest. There’s always much music, dancing, feasting, and drinking of rice wine involved! Family and community are important at this time, and many Amis return home to their villages, just as the Chinese return home at Lunar New Year.

Mainly living on the coastal plains and in the valleys of Hualien and Taitung counties, the Amis are the largest of Taiwan’s aboriginal groups, making up over one-third of all the island’s native peoples. Interestingly, the Amis are a matrilineal society. This means that the men marry into the woman’s family, and it is also

daughters who inherit land and property. However, when it comes to public affairs, such as organizing the annual festival, the responsibilities lie firmly on the shoulders of the men. Each generation of males has specific roles to fulfill, with the elders deciding on the date. As it’s dependent on the harvest, in different areas the festival may fall anytime from July to September.

Each village also has its own rituals, and celebrations may last from one to seven days. The formal opening ceremony is only for men, with the village chief and elders singing holy songs to welcome the gods. But the festival as a whole is a lively time for everyone to participate in not only singing and dancing but also various contests of skill.

For some of the males of the group, the festival is even more significant as it coincides with rituals to welcome them to adulthood, meaning a higher status within the tribe. They may also join the pre-festival fishing expeditions, hopefully catching enough fish to impress the elders on their return. In fact, many of these young men are likely just as eager to show off their fishing skills to impress the ladies, since harvest festival is also a time for romance! On the final evening, when the men dance in a circle, each woman may step forward and give a love token to the man she likes. If he returns her affection, the couple leaves the circle to dance together.

(From English Digest, July 2009) 58. Which of the following would you NOT see at the Amis Harvest Festival?

(A) Men dancing in skirts.

(B) A large amount of alcohol being drunk.

(C) Aborigines playing traditional musical instruments. (D) People planting rice in the fields.

59. According to the article, what is TRUE about the Amis tribe? (A) They are the oldest aboriginal group in Taiwan.

(B) They own the largest amount of land in Taiwan.

(C) They are the only aborigine group to celebrate the harvest festival. (D) They are the largest aboriginal group in Taiwan.

60. What is mentioned as a feature of the festival? (A) A competition to eat the most fish. (B) A religious ritual to close the festival. (C) A romantic dance to pair up couples. (D) Ceremonies to praise the village elders.

61. The word “affection” in this passage means ________. (A) beauty
