HKUST Confers Honorary Fellowships on Three Distinguished Individuals

Three distinguished individuals, Prof Cheng Shiu Yuen, Ms Anita Fung and Mr John B Harrison, were conferred Honorary Fellowships by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Offciating at the ceremony were the Honorable Andrew Liao Cheung-sing, Chairman of HKUST Council and Prof Tony F Chan, President of HKUST.
Prof Cheng Shiu-Yuen is an Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at HKUST. Prof Cheng joined the University as Head of the Mathematics Department in 1996, he became Dean of Science in 2004 and was made a Chair Professor a year later. Prof Cheng was later promoted as the Acting Vice-President for Academic Affairs and Deputy to the President. He had also served on the University Court, Council and Senate. Prof Cheng’s research in devising novel theorems on Riemannian geometry and the study of curved surfaces has won global recognition. He was not only a fellow of the American Mathematical Society and recipient of the Chern Prize, but was also voted as one of HKUST’s Best Ten Lecturers fve years in a row.
Ms Anita Fung, BBS, JP is the former CEO for Hong Kong at global bank HSBC. Being the frst female executive handed this position in the bank’s 150-year history, Ms Fung has climbed up the ladder as she rotated amongst areas including capital markets and regional trading. During her 30 years of banking career, Ms Fung contributed greatly to the expansion of Hong Kong’s fnance sector and the city’s rise to become a leading offshore renminbi hub. She has held many positions in infuential fnancial organizations and public institutions, including the Vice-chairman of the Finance Committee at HKUST Council. Her contributions to the banking industry won her a Bronze Bauhinia Star in 2013.
Mr John B Harrison is a professional accountant. His study in mathematics at Durham University in UK had led him towards accountancy and KPMG. Starting out with audit, due diligence, IPOs and other advisory work, Mr Harrison became a Partner of the frm in 1987 and eventually Chairman and CEO of KPMG China and Hong Kong, as well as Chairman of KPMG Asia Pacifc, from 2003-2009. After retirement, he took up independent non-executive directorships at many major frms in Hong Kong. He frst served HKUST in 2008, and assumed various positions at its Council thereafter. He is now an Honorary Court Member of HKUST.
