Abstract
Feelings of fatigue and decreased physical capacity are common responses in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. The purpose of this study was to (1) evaluate fatigue perceived by CAD patients, (2) explore the relationships among perception of fatigue, exercise capacity, and daily activity performance, and (3) determine changes in fatigue and physical capacity following rehabilitation. The subjects included 43 patients who participated in a rehabilitation
program. Four questionnaires were completed by each subject prior to, at the eighth week, and at the completion of the rehabilitation program Fatigue/Stamina Scale, the Profile of Mood
Status, the Duke Activity Status Index, and the Beck Depression Inventory. The results indicated that patients reported mild to moderate degrees of fatigue. The fatigue scores decreased while exercise capacity and daily activity performance improved throughout the rehabilitation program. Significant prediction variables for fatigue were daily activity levels and
depression scores. Results of this study may help nurses to improve nursing care of cardiac patients.
