HKUST Finance Research Again Ranks First In Asia Pacific

August 4, 2005 Hong Kong...The Finance faculty at the School of Business and

Management of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST Business School)) ranked first in research productivity in the Asia Pacific, according to an

international study by Arizona State University (ASU).

This is the third time HKUST has come top in the region in finance research. It was

recognized as No.1 by academic journals Financial Management in 2002 and Pacific Basin Finance Journal in 2001. The School’s overall research also ranked top in the region. It placed No.20 and No.25 in the world respectively by Financial Times and the University of Texas at Dallas in 2005.

The ASU study ranked university finance departments and other institutions by the number of publications in four top finance journals (Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial

Economics, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis and Review of Financial Studies) over the period 1991-2004. HKUST ranked 23rd in the world and is the only Asian university listed among the top 25. It also placed ahead of UC Berkeley and Yale (both 25th),

Princeton (46th) and Dartmouth (49th). Only three Asian universities, including HKUST, were listed among the top 100. Korea University placed 72nd and the Chinese University 79th.

Professor K.C. Chan, Dean of HKUST Business School, said: “I am delighted that we were ranked among the very best in the world. I am thankful to our faculty who are dedicated to their cutting-edge research. As an international financial center, Hong Kong needs world-class academics to create knowledge, provide advice, and develop talents. The ranking testifies to our research strengths and certainly helps us attract and retain outstanding researchers and students.”

Prof Kalok.Chan, Head of Department of Finance, said: “It is gratifying to see that the relentless hard work of our faculty has been recognized by the international academic community. Finance research is highly applicable to the business world. I believe the new knowledge generated by our faculty will create value for our students and for business professionals in the region. ”
