Dr Chang, an assistant professor in the Division of Social Science, began teaching at Goddard College, Vermont, a progressive college of non traditional learners based on the philosophies of US educationali~t John Dewey.

When I arrived at UST in 1992, I went from one extreme to the other;’Dr Chang said

,“

Although I can

t implement the Goddard system here, it has influenced my teaching style.

Dr Chang asks her students to find a personal connection with her classes.

That's how I define critical thinking-making con-nections between life experience and what's taught in the classroom;' she sa峙,

To Dr Chang, encouraging critical thinking is central to the role of the School of Humanities and Social Science (HSS).

In providing general education courses for every UST student, HSS has the job of broadening students

goal for the School of Business and Management (SBM) in the future. Presenting the second lecture by UST deans on future directions, Dean Yuk-Shee Chan called for incentives to recruit and retain academic sta叮.

A Dean Chan outlines the vision for SBM int。 thenext century.

The faculty is the foundation of a uni-versity,’”Prof Chan said.

We have a strong, international faculty, but there are relatively few people at senior grades

:’

Calling faculty to work together to reaf-firm the original vision for the School, Prof Chan said that SBM 法 strengthswere· its youth and international standing in a grow-ingmarket.

The School這 internationalreputation has been built by an international faculty and a successful exchange program for undergraduates and MBA students.

We should use our international stand-i睹的 leverageto raise our profile locally;' Prof Chan said.

'Although our corporate links are good, the School needs to increase its visibility in the wider community."

A successful initiative is the Kellogg/ HKUST Executive MBA, which begins in January.

It's a truly regional program. We have enrolled 30 senior executives, some flying in from Shanghai, lvlalaysia and Thailand to attend;' said Prof Chan.

This is a great outreach program as well as great education.

As well as strengths, Prof Chan's audit pinpointed some weaknesses, including the faculty imbalance.

In leading business schools, usually ·about 50% of the 臼c叫tyare full profess。此,

2

with the remainder spread evenly between assistant and associate professor ranks.

In contra哎, 70% of SBM faculty are assistant professors, with only 15% and 10% at the associate and full professor ranks. The remaining 5% are visiting positions.

'Activities such as consultancy, executive training and professional service are usually tackled by senior faculty so our work in these areas is very constrained;' Prof Chan said.

In a competitive job market, we need proactive strategies to recruit and retain the best people and take a risk on those with potential."

SBM is also constrained by the large numbers of students admitted each year, but these numbers are helping to build a valuable alumni network.

In 30 years

Chinese University has produced 6,000 BBA graduates. In just six years

we have produced nearly 2,000;' Prof Chan said.

We'll soon have a large alumni body, working in the right places:' This year's Congregation sees the School's first PhD graduates and Prof Chan remains committed to a research-invigorated program.

Ultimately, this will di 在erentiateus;' he said.

The

Way

Forward

Focus on recruiting and retaining faculty “... we need preemptive strate-gies."

Evaluate and maximize the produc-tivity of the curricula

We have to m的心 mize the employment potentiaJ of our graduates."

Use international network as leverage

We have formed international partner-ships carefully and strategically.’, Build up resources on China and Asia

China business expertise is a key ben-. efit we can offer the business comunity

and our international partners.’,

Work hard on local visibility and outreach

Reef Survey Exposes Global Devastation

Crucial evidence confirming the devastation

of coral reefs focused international me_dia attention on 出ecampus in mid-October.

The evidence was collected by Reef Check 97, the first global survey of coral reefs, organized by UST 法·institute for Environment and Sustainable Development (IESD), and coordinated on the Internet.

The project involved a volunteer force of over 100 marine scientists and 750 recrea tional divers who surveyed more than 250 coral reefs in 30 countries this past summer (see Genes時, 4June).

At a news conference on 16 October, an audience of 19 news organizations listened to IESD Director Prof Gary Heinke and Dr Gregor Hodgson, Reef Check's global coordinator, report that the

rain forests of the sea’,are in far worse condition than had been imagined.

Since 1990 divers have reported rapidly increasing damage to reefs all overthewor祠, butthere has been little supporting data;’Dr Hodgson said.

Now we have evidence that coral reefs are being plundered on a global basis.’,

In Brief

Senate Approves Reduced 100-level Weighting The Senate has approved a proposal to reduce the weighting of 100-level courses, as reported in Genesis on 18 September.

Beginning with this year's new intake, all 100-level courses will receive half the weighting of 200- and 300-level courses w~1en fin.a'! graduation honors are calcu lated.

HSS Minors to Start in Spring

The Senate also approved the introduction of minor programs in the School of Humanities and Social Science from next spring. A survey conducted by the Division of Humanities found that 46% of students enrolled in its courses would like the opportunity to take a minor.

PG Courses Open to UST Staff

University staff can now attend postgraduate courses in science, engineering, humanities and social science for personal or professional development. The School of Business and Management welcomes staff applications to f叫ldegree programs onl下

Vehicle Licenses on Display Please!

Security would like to remind all staff and students that in Hong Kong you must display your vehicle license certificate on your car windscreen at all times-w1like in the US. Without 出evalid license, it is illegal to oper-ate the vehicle, including on campus grounds. Security will deal with offenders on campus. Off-campus, you

face police action if caught.

Newly-arrived readers should also be aware that once you have a Hong Kong ID card, you must also have a Hong Kong driving license. You can no longer use overseas licenses or an international driving permit.

Connecting the Classroom with Real Life continued from p.1

In another course, Gender, Culture and Society, a program of speakers, seminars and discussions brings the subject to life.

I study the women

s movement because I'm interested in feminism

;

she explained, "but as a blossoming social movement, it

s also a great way of studying recent changes in Hong Kong society:'

Even a large lecture class in cultural psychology benefits from Dr Chang's approach. She has designed an assignment to truly cha)lenge attitudes-every student is required to spend a Sunday afternoon among the domestic ,vorkers in Central’s Statue Square and report back.

Many students have never talked to a Filipina domestic worker before. They think I'm sending them into grave dange1-;' she said.

When the students come back, they can

t believe how much they have in common with these women. It's an experience that really changes their views.

Women On the Rise in

Engineering

T he prop

……

n is on the

in the School of Engineering. First-year figures show that 16% of this year

s intake are women, compared to 13% last year.

The increase provides the closest male/female ratio among first-year engineers-5: I -since UST opened in 1991. This ratio has been steadily decreasing every year, since hitting a high of 9: 1 in 1993-94.

勻,mvery happy to see this increase

:’

said Dr Helen Shen, Engineering

s associate dean.

I think our activities, such as the women’s dinner at Summer Camp, have helped, but I think these figures also reflect changing attitudes in society.’,

In three departments-Chemical Engineering, Computer Science and Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management-women now number 。如r20% of the first-year class. The School's total male/female ratio is now 6: l, down from 7: l last year.

The School's figures are getting closer to norms in the US and Canada. In both countries, 1995 figures showed 19% of engineer-ing students were female-after a decade of campaigning by

government and the profession.

Dr Shen stresses that the School is not driving female recruit ment for its own sake, but is concerned that women with potential in engineering may be misguided by inaccurate perceptions of the profession in secondary schools and family circles.

If women students aren

t interested in engineering, that's fine 的 longas they haven

t been discouraged by myths and prejudice;' she said.

Garage Sale Fills Car Park

Bargain hunters packed the UST car park for the fourth and largest garage sale on 18 October, with over 130 tables of goodies.

One person’

“We

re not affiliated to any particular organizatio叫, Jeansaid.

“T

hese sales are for anyone in the UST community to enjoy, regard-less of rank or whether they live on campus." Operation Santa also benefited from the proceeds of commercial table rentals.

Amidst the bric a brac and books, the University Women’s Group sold members

home cooking, including 100 samos的, 200 dumplings and an entire batch of yellow pea jelly snapped up by an admiring customer, while a group of children sold cookies and cold drinks to raise money for Operation Santa. The next garage sale is scheduled for spring.
