HKUST TO PRESENT ITS THIRD CONGREGATION

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology will confer degrees on 1104 undergraduates and 216 postgraduates at its Third Congregation on 2 and 3 November 1995 (Thursday and Friday) at the HKUST campus.

Chancellor of the University, the Governor, the Right Honorable Christopher Patten, will preside over the Congregation on the first day, and Sir Sze-Yuen Chung, Chairman of the Council, will officiate at the ceremony on the second day.

This year, four honorary degrees will be conferred. On 2 November, honorary doctorates will be awarded to Professor Leroy Chang, renowned scientist and currently Dean of Science at HKUST, for his achievements in semiconductor physics, materials and devices; and Dr Li Ka-shing, successful entrepreneur and Chairman of Cheung Kong (Holdings) Ltd. and Hutchison Whampoa Ltd., for his contributions to education.

On 3 November, the University will award honorary doctorates to Professor Lu Yongxiang , Vice-President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, for his achievements in mechanical engineering and engineering education; and Sir Gordon Macwhinnie, business leader and former Chairman of the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club, for his contributions to the planning, construction and establishment of HKUST.

The University will also recognize outstanding performance by faculty and graduates. Dr Kin-Yin Li from the Department of Mathematics will receive the Michael G . Gale Medal for Distinguished Teaching. Mr Ip Kin-Fai, the second President of the Students’ Union, will be awarded the Stephen Cheong Kam-chuen Medal for Distinguished Service to the Student Body.

Academic Achievement Medals will be awarded to seven graduates who maintained a solid A cumulative grade average throughout their undergraduate career.
