The objective of this paper was to study the anticancer constituents in Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch. The compds. were isolated and purified by means of column chromatog. with silica gel, Sephadex LH-20, ODS-HPLC, and pre-TLC etc. The structures were identified by means of 1H- and 13C-NMR. The MTT assay was applied to test antitumor activities of compds. from Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch. on adenocarcinoma cell line LA795. Five compds. were isolated from the Et acetate ext. in the rhizome of Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch. Their structures were identified as licoricidin (1), β-sitosterol , betulinic acid Me ester (3),

5,7,4'-trihydroxy-6,8-diprenylisoflavone (4), and glisoflavanone (5). Compd. 3 was firstly obtained from Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch, and compds. 1, 2, and 4 were found to inhibit the proliferation of adenocarcinoma cell line LA795.
