HKUST Announces Mathematics Appointment
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today announces the appointment of Professor Wu-Chung Hsiang, formerly of Princeton University, as Professor in the Department of Mathematics.
Professor Hsiang comes to HKUST with a record of nearly thirty years of teaching and research in theoretical mathematics. He has published more than 70 papers in professional journals, and delivered major addresses at International Congresses of Mathematicians. He has held prestigious fellowships, including being named a Sloan Fellow (1967-69), a Senior Fellow of the National Science Foundation (1971-72), and a Guggenheim Fellow (197576). While holding a professorship at Princeton, Professor Hsiang has also been Visiting Professor at the University of Amsterdam, the University of Bonn, the University of California, Berkeley, and Stanford. In addition, he serves on the Editorial Board of the Annals of Mathematics, and is a member of the Academia Sinica of the Republic of China and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Professor Hsiang was born in Chekiang, China. He earned his BA at National Taiwan University and his PhD at Princeton. Upon graduation he joined the faculty of Yale as a Lecturer in Mathematics, and became a Professor there in
1968. In 1972 he returned to Princeton. He has been a Professor of Mathematics, and Chairman of the Department (1982-l 985), until accepting the appointment at HKUST. -. - ‘f I- - -.. ‘7 .-. rc
