(LT) B4 L3 Progress and Preservation: Striking a Balance

1. It’s 必要、要緊等 Adj. that S (should) VR

1. 此句型用來表達重要性或急迫性時,常搭配 important, essential, necessary, vital, urgent,

crucial, critical, imperative, advisable 等形容詞。

2. 因用來表達必要、急迫,語義中含有「應該」之意,因此在 that 子句需加 should,久而久 之溝通雙方都知道有「應該」,便經常省略。

例 1: It is urgent that the problem (should) be addressed immediately.

例 2: It is critical that the government (should) deal with the problem in no time.

其它省略 should 句型:

1. suggest/order/demand that S (should) VR 表達建議/命令/要求 (B4 L1 pattern)

2. S1 + V1 lest S2 (should) VR (此處 should 並非表示責任的「應該」,而是「可能會」。)

例 3: My English teacher insists that everyone (should) turn in the assignment on time. 例 4: I turned down the radio lest it (should) interfere with his lessons.

2. WH 疑問詞引導的名詞子句 (句型書 p.24)

... who/which (N)/how (adj/adv)/what/why/when/whether/if-clause

1. WH 疑問詞引導的名詞子句可當主詞也可當受詞,用直述句寫法,而非疑問句。 I don’t know where does he live? (×) → I don’t know where he lives. (o)

2. 名詞子句當主詞時視為一件事情,需搭配單數動詞。 例 1. I don’t know why he lied to me.

when he left this morning. where he lives.

how he passed the test. / how tall he is. what he’s hiding. / what is inside the box. which team will win. / which girl he likes.

who she’s going to marry. / who will be elected the class leader.

例 2: What you said about the students is true.

表達「是否」的名詞子句為 whether /if S + V (or not)或 whether or not S +V

*if 名詞子句的限制: 1. 不可當主詞。 2. or not 只可放句尾。 3. 不能放介系詞後面。

例 3: I’m not sure whether or not he’ll come. if/whether he’ll come (or not). 例 4: Whether (or not) he’ll come remains a question.

例 5: Ethan had an argument with his parents about whether he should take the job.

註:台灣有些文法書會寫if 子句不可接 or not,其實只要不緊接著,是可以的 喔!
