VISITOR EXPENDITURE SURVEY

4TH QUARTER / 2012

No. 4 Total spending of visitors amounted to MOP14.6 billion in the fourth quarter of 2012, up by 9%

in comparison with MOP13.4 billion in the fourth quarter of 2011. Spending of overnight visitors increased by 17% year-on-year to MOP12.6 billion, while that of same-day visitors decreased by 24%

to MOP2.0 billion. For the whole year of 2012, total spending of visitors reached MOP52.3 billion, up by 15% from MOP45.3 billion in 2011.

Per-capita Spending

In the fourth quarter of 2012, per-capita spending of visitors was MOP2,019, an increase of 11% year-on-year. Per-capita spending of visitors from Mainland China increased by 11% to MOP2,574 and that of Mainland visitors travelling under the Individual Visit Scheme (IVS) amounted to MOP2,610; besides, spending of visitors from Japan and Singapore stood at MOP1,788 and MOP1,641 respectively. As regards per-capita spending of long-haul visitors, those from Australia, the UK and the US spent MOP1,360, MOP1,230 and MOP1,155 respectively. For the whole year of 2012, per-capita spending of visitors was MOP1,864, up by 15% compared with MOP1,619 in 2011.

Per-capita spending of overnight visitors increased by 10% year-on-year to MOP3,573; per- capita spending of same-day visitors decreased by 17% to MOP534. Per-capita spending of overnight and same-day Mainland visitors amounted to MOP4,673 and MOP630 respectively; per-capita spending of overnight and same-day Mainland visitors travelling under IVS reached MOP4,803 and MOP987. Moreover, overnight visitors from Taiwan, China spent MOP3,389, while same-day visitors from Singapore and the US spent MOP480 and MOP459 respectively.

Structure of Visitor Expenditure

Non-shopping spending of visitors rose by 19% year-on-year to MOP1,044 in the fourth quarter of 2012. Japanese visitors had the highest per-capita non-shopping spending of MOP1,633 and Singaporean visitors spent MOP1,186. In respect of long-haul visitors, non-shopping spending of visitors from Australia, the UK and the US amounted to MOP1,180, MOP1,117 and MOP1,010 respectively.

Analysed by structure of non-shopping spending, expenses on Accommodation and Food &

Beverage accounted for 51% and 35% respectively, while that on Entertainment & Others and Local Transport shared only 4% and 3% respectively.

Shopping spending of visitors amounted to MOP975, up by 3% year-on-year. Per-capita shopping spending of Mainland visitors took the lead at MOP1,445, with that of IVS visitors reaching MOP1,598. Taiwanese visitors spent MOP463 and Singaporean visitors spent MOP455. Moreover, long-haul visitors from Australia and the US spent MOP179 and MOP144 respectively on shopping.

The preferred shopping items of visitors included Clothing (23%), Jewellery & Watches (19%) and Local Food Products (19%). For the Mainland visitors, Clothing (24%) and Jewellery & Watches (21%) were the more preferable items; meanwhile, visitors from the UK, the US, Hong Kong and Singapore spent more on Local Food Products.

Characteristics of Visitors

In the fourth quarter of 2012, 61% of the visitors came to Macao mainly for vacation, 9% for gaming, 6% for visiting relatives & friends, and 5% for business, attending conference & exhibitions.

Analysed by occupation, 23% were senior officials & managers; 12% were clerks, and 11%

were technicians & associate professionals. Moreover, 31% were the unemployed and the economically inactive persons such as housewives, students and the retirees.

Visitors’ Comments

About 82% of the visitors were satisfied with the environmental hygiene, and 75% were satisfied with the public facilities; however, 5% considered that the points of tourist attractions were inadequate.

There were 91% of the visitors satisfied with the services and facilities rendered by hotels in the fourth quarter of 2012, while 90% complimented on the services of shops. However, a respective proportion of 6% and 5% of the visitor-users suggested that the services of public transport and travel agencies should be improved.

Methodology

In the fourth quarter of 2012, per-capita spending and total spending of visitors are extrapolated from about 41,000 effective questionnaires of the Visitor Expenditure Survey; meanwhile, 1,100 effective samples were collected from the Visitors’ Comments Survey.

The Visitor Expenditure Survey and the Visitors' Comments Survey adopt systematic sampling in selecting samples who are non-residents of Macao. At different Checkpoints, enumerators collect from departing visitors spending data and comments on services and facilities during their stay in Macao.

Glossary

Visitor: any person taking a trip to a main destination outside his/her usual environment, for less than a year, for any main purpose other than to be employed by a resident entity in the country or place visited.

Classification of visitors:

a) Overnight visitor: visitor who stays at least one night in a collective or private accommodation in the place visited. To fit the local context of Macao, two criteria are added in considering overnight visitor: (1) he/she stays in Macao for 24 hours or more, or (2) he/she has accommodation arrangement with a hotel or similar establishment, even though he/she stays less than 24 hours and does not stay overnight in Macao.

b) Same-Day Visitor: visitor who does not spend the night in a collective or private accommodation in the place visited.

Main Purpose of Visit: the most important reason or motivation for the trip, in the absence of which the trip would not have taken place.

Visitor Expenditure: the amount paid by visitor for the purchase of goods and services for own use or to give away, including expenses paid by the visitors or reimbursed by others such as relatives, friends or employers. Visitor expenditure excludes gaming expenses, donations, expenses on purchase of assets and goods for resale.

Note: “Visitor” is defined in accordance with the International Recommendations for Tourism Statistics 2008 of UNWTO.
