- Attributable to a rise of 13.8% in visitor arrivals, total spending (excluding gaming expenses) of visitors in the fourth quarter of 2018 increased by 1.3% year- on-year to MOP18.42 billion. Total spending of overnight visitors and same-day visitors recorded growth of 1.2% and 1.7% respectively. For the whole year of 2018, total spending of visitors reached MOP69.69 billion, up by 13.6% year-on-year; total spending of overnight visitors and same-day visitors grew by 13.0% and 16.2% respectively.

As regards per-capita spending, Mainland visitors spent an average of MOP2,091, down by 13.5% year-on-year; spending of those from Guangdong Province (MOP1,795) and Fujian Province (MOP1,384) showed decreases of 13.9% and 19.8% respectively. Per-capita spending of Mainland visitors travelling under the Individual Visit Scheme (IVS) fell by 9.4% year-on-year to MOP2,552, with spending of Guangdong visitors dropping by 15.8% while that of Fujian visitors rising by 5.8%.

In the fourth quarter of 2018, total spending of visitors from Mainland China amounted to MOP14.72 billion, down marginally by 0.3% year- on-year; spending of Guangdong visitors (MOP5.19 billion) rose by 3.4% while that of Fujian visitors (MOP373 million) decreased by 3.9%. Total spending of Mainland overnight visitors (MOP11.90 billion) registered a slight increase of 0.5%, whereas that of Mainland same- day visitors (MOP2.82 billion) dropped by 3.6%.
Per-capita spending of visitors in the fourth quarter decreased by 11.0% year-on-year to MOP1,844, with that of overnight visitors and same-day visitors dropping by 4.2% and 17.3% respectively. For the whole year of 2018, per-capita spending of visitors was MOP1,946, up by 3.5% year-on-year; spending of overnight visitors and same-day visitors showed respective growth of 5.5% and 3.1%.

Analysed by main purpose of visit, per-capita spending of visitors coming for MICE events took the lead at MOP3,992. In 2018, per-capita spending of visitors coming for MICE events was MOP3,506, while spending of those coming for shopping and vacation was MOP2,618 and MOP2,552 respectively.
Visitors spent mainly on shopping (44.3% of total), accommodation (27.2%) and food & beverage (21.1%) in the fourth quarter. In 2018, shopping, accommodation and food & beverage accounted for 47.1%, 25.6% and 20.0% of visitor spending respectively.

Per-capita spending of visitors from Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan dropped by 9.8%, 11.9% and 2.4% respectively, whereas spending of those from Japan and Hong Kong rose by 18.2% and 2.8%
respectively. Among long-haul visitors, those from the United States and the United Kingdom saw increases in their per-capita spending;
however, spending of those from Australia decreased.

Visitors spent 44.3% of their spending on shopping, yet with per-capita shopping spending falling by 17.5% year-on-year to MOP817. Visitors from Mainland China spent an average of MOP1,060 on shopping (50.7% of their per-capita spending), while shopping spending of Mainland IVS visitors reached MOP1,556 (61.0% of their per-capita spending).
As regards overnight visitors, per-capita spending of those from the United States (+19.6%) and Japan (+19.5%) showed significant increases, whereas spending of those from Thailand (-12.3%), Singapore (-11.1%) and Australia (-10.7%) declined notably.

Analysed by country/place, per-capita spending on accommodation and food & beverage of Japanese visitors peaked at MOP992 and MOP661 respectively.
With regard to types of purchases, per-capita shopping spending on cosmetics & perfume (MOP252) and local food products (MOP224) decreased by 12.0% and 19.6% respectively year-on-year. Mainland visitors had relatively high per-capita spending on cosmetics &
perfume (MOP355) as compared to visitors from other countries/places, whereas visitors from Malaysia (MOP339) and Singapore (MOP327) had higher per-capita spending on local food products.

Analysed by main purpose of visit, per-capita spending of visitors coming for MICE events topped the list in the fourth quarter, at MOP3,992, up by 13.0% year-on-year; however, per-capita spending of those coming for vacation (MOP2,500) and shopping (MOP2,090) declined by 13.3% and 24.6% respectively.
There were 53.1% of the visitors who came to Macao for vacation and 8.0% for visiting relatives or friends, up by 1.2 percentage points and 1.3 percentage points respectively year-on-year. In addition, the proportions of visitors who came to Macao for shopping (7.6%), gaming (2.7%) and MICE events (1.0%) dropped by 0.5 percentage points, 1.3 percentage points and 0.4 percentage points respectively.

Unemployed & Economically Inactive Individuals
As regards visitors’ comments in the fourth quarter, the proportions of visitors who were satisfied with the services and facilities of hotels (89.4%) and environmental hygiene (84.1%) inched down by 0.3 percentage points and 0.8% percentage points respectively quarter-to- quarter.
The shares of visitors who complimented on the services of travel agencies (82.6%) and the services & facilities of gaming establishments (80.3%) increased by 3.2 percentage points and 0.3 percentage points respectively quarter-to-quarter, whereas the proportion of those who expressed satisfaction towards the services of retail shops (82.2%) remained stable.
The proportion of visitors who considered that there were adequate points of tourist attractions in Macao (59.7%) edged up by 0.7 percentage points over the third quarter of 2018.

In 2018, per-capita spending of visitors increased by 3.5% year-on-year to MOP1,946. Mainland visitors spent an average of MOP2,242, up by 1.8%; among them, IVS visitors had a per-capita spending of MOP2,609, an increase of 4.9%.
Per-capita spending of same-day visitors went up by 3.1% year- on-year to MOP777, with spending of those from Mainland China and Singapore rising by 0.9% and 3.2% respectively.
Attributable to a rise of 9.8% in number of visitor arrivals and a growth of 3.5% in per-capita spending of visitors in 2018, total spending of visitors reached MOP69.69 billion, up by 13.6% year- on-year.

Overnight visitors from Mainland China, Japan and Taiwan registered growth of 3.5%, 8.9% and 4.9% in their per-capita spending respectively; however, spending of those from Malaysia and Thailand decreased.

Total spending of overnight visitors and same-day visitors amounted to MOP56.24 billion and MOP13.45 billion in 2018, up by 13.0% and 16.2% respectively year-on-year.
Total spending of visitors from Mainland China rose by 15.9%
year-on-year to MOP56.65 billion (81.3% of total visitor spending), with that of IVS visitors adding up to MOP32.01 billion, a growth of 21.3%.

Analysed by main purpose of visit, per-capita spending of MICE visitors reached MOP3,506 in 2018, a rise of 1.4% year-on-year;
spending of those coming for shopping (MOP2,618) and vacation (MOP2,552) both increased by 1.8%.
For the whole year of 2018, visitors’ satisfaction towards the various services and facilities in Macao registered increases to different extents; the proportions of visitors who were satisfied with the services of travel agencies (79.6%) and public facilities (80.4%) surged by 8.9 percentage points and 6.8 percentage points respectively year-on- year.

Visitor Expenditure Survey adopts quota sampling method in selecting samples of visitors. Enumerators collect spending data as well as comments on services and facilities from visitors during their stay in Macao at major departure points.
Any person taking a trip to a main destination outside his/her usual environment, for less than a year, for any main purpose other than to be employed by a resident entity in the country or place visited.
Visitor who stays at least one night in a residential accommodation or casino in the place visited.
Visitor who does not spend the night in any residential accommodation, hotel/guesthouse, or casino in the place visited.
The amount paid by visitors for the purchase of goods and services for own use or to give away, including expenses paid by the visitors or reimbursed by others such as relatives, friends or employers. Spending of visitors excludes gaming expenses, donations, expenses on purchase of assets and goods for resale.
