Excerpt from Anne Frank’s Diary Dearest Kitty,
This morning I was constantly interrupted. As a result, I haven’t been able to finish a single thing I’ve begun. We have a new pastime, namely, filling packages with powdered gravy. The gravy is one of Gies & Co.’s products. Mr. Kugler hasn’t been able to find anyone else to do this job, and the wages he has to pay us are lower. It’s the kind of work they do in prisons. It’s incredibly monotonous and makes us dizzy and giggly.
Brutal things are happening outside. At any time of day or night, poor, helpless people are being dragged out of their homes. They’re allowed to take only a backpack and a little cash with them, and even then, their possessions are usually snatched away from them on the way. Families are being torn apart. Children come home from school to find that their par-
ents have disappeared. Women return from shopping to find their houses sealed and their families gone. Christians in Hol- land are also living in dread because their sons are being sent to Germany. Everyone is scared. Every night, hundreds of planes pass over Holland on their way to German cities, to sow their bombs on German soil. Every hour, hundreds—or maybe even thousands—of people are being slaughtered in Russia and Africa. No one can keep out of the conflict; the en- tire world is at war. Even though the Allies are doing better now, the end is nowhere in sight.
As for us, we’re quite fortunate, and luckier than millions of people. It’s quiet and safe here, and we’re using our money to buy food. We’re so selfish that we talk about “after the war” and look forward to new clothes and shoes, when ac- tually we should save whatever we can and put aside every penny to help others when the war is over.
The children in this neighborhood run around in thin shirts and wooden shoes. They have no coats, no socks, no caps, and no one to help them. Gnawing on a carrot to lessen their hunger pain, they walk from their cold houses through cold streets to even colder classrooms. Things have gotten so bad in Holland that throngs of children stop passersby in the streets to beg for a piece of bread.
I could spend hours telling you about the suffering the war has brought, but I’d only make myself more miserable. All we can do is wait, as soberly as possible, for it to end.
Jews and Christians alike are waiting; the whole world is waiting, and many are waiting for death.

National Pingtung University of Science and Technology : A place where technology and education meet
What pops into your head when you think of a university? Exams? Huge classes? A life with minimal fun? These thoughts raced through my head as I drove toward National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (NPUST).
Upon arrival, it didn’t take me long to realize that NPUST is more than an academic center.
NPUST has one of the most beautiful campuses on the island of Taiwan. Green fields, gardens and mountains create an outstanding learning environment. In addition, NPUST is environmentally friendly. The university finds it particularly important to reuse water. Students are encouraged to use the shuttle or to bike around school.
NPUST desires to raise up a new generation of farmers. Understanding that it’s difficult to make a living as a farmer, NPUST strives to combine technology and farming. The university’s president says, “We need to develop all kinds of technology to help the world.” For this reason, people at NPUST developed a machine to spray pesticides on certain crops.
This cuts down on the work that farmers have to do.
When I went outside the university’s four walls, I discovered something mysterious. I was in a wooded area. The sounds of birds, monkeys and the wind tickled my ears. But where was I? I discovered I was at the Pingtung Rescue Center for Endangered Wild Animals. A university with an animal rescue center? Unbelievable!
At the center visitors can see many animals including orangutans, turtles, bears and even a liger. A liger is a cross between a male lion and a female tiger. But the Pingtung Rescue Center is no ordinary zoo; it’s a place with stories to cherish.
About 20 years ago, people were capturing young orangutans and other wild animals to keep as pets. As these animals grew, they became too big and dangerous to keep at home. Their owners no longer wanted them, and the animals had no
place to go. The Pingtung Rescue Center opened its doors in 1992 to give them a home. Currently, the rescue center aims to educate the public on how to protect animals and the environment.
25. According to the first two paragraphs, what is NOT TRUE about National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (NPUST)?

(B) It values academic achievements more than anything else.
(C) It is trying its best to be friendly to the environment.
(D) Its campus is noted for its beauty.
26. What does NPUST NOT aim to do in the third paragraph?
(A) To develop all kinds of technology (B) To raise up a new generation of farmers
(C) To have developed a new machine to spray pesticide (D) To make light of the fact that farming is difficult 27. What is NOT TRUE about the Pingtung Rescue Center?
(A) It is located in a wooded area.
(B) It is right on campus.
(C) You can see and hear animals there.
(D) Only household pets can be seen there.
28. Which of the following is THE LEAST CLOSE in meaning to Unbelievable in the fourth paragraph?
(A) Incredible (B) Unthinkable (C) Predictable (D) Unimaginable
29 What is TRUE about the orangutans in the Animal Rescue Center?
(A) They were being caught in the past decade.
(B) They were being caught for the purpose of being consumed as medicine.
(C) Their owners changed their minds about these orangutans and decided to give them up.
(D) The Rescue Center turned down the request of housing these orangutans.

The craziest winter sport of all?
Fans of the most recent Thor movie will know about Ragnarok. It is the final battle between good and evil in ancient Norse stories. The energy-drink maker Red Bull uses the name in their icy, fierce, modern-day competition. Red Bull Rag- narok is the wildest endurance snowkiting race on earth! It has taken place every year since 2010 on the snowy hills of Nor- way. Participants include skiers and snowboarders with power kites.
In addition to racing each other, participants are fighting weather that is not very stable. Light wind is troublesome because it requires a lot of effort to control the kites. Strong gusts of wind can be equally difficult to deal with. Mostly, however, the racers fight their own urge to quit. “I do a lot of racing, and I’ve never done anything as hard as this,” said one racer. In 2017, only eight of the 350 participants finished the 130-kilometer course.
If you want to try out your endurance, sign up for 2019. This year’s Ragnarok is on now!
30. Why does Red Bull use the name “Ragnarok” for the competition?
(A) Because it refers to a war.
(B) Because it refers to a movie.
(C) Because it refers to a superstition.
(D) Because it refers to an energy drink.
31. Which of the following is THE LEAST CLOSE in meaning to endurance in the first paragraph?
(A) Patience (B) Toleration (C) Hurrying (D) Bearing
32. What is NOT TRUE about the snowkiting race?
(A) The racers are against the weather.
(B) It takes little effort to control the kites in light wind.
(C) It is equally hard to control kites in both light wind and strong wind.
(D) Racers who finished the whole race in 2017 were very few in comparison to the total number.

The Forgotten Science: Geography makes a silent return
In many ways geography is the forgotten science. Even the word “geography” tends to make people think of students la- beling maps in social studies class. But that hasn’t always been true. Before the internet, the world was a mysterious place.
In many cases, people didn’t really know what existed a few miles from home. Studying geography gave people a way to learn about the world.
Defined as the study of Earth, geography has always had a focus on maps. But mapping hasn’t always been easy. In the days before satellites, mapmaking required years of dangerous and difficult work. But mapping also meant a chance at ad- venture and fame.
Geography became the subject of explorers. People were eager to hear about the new places and things geographers had studied. National Geographic is a great example of this interest. For more than a hundred years, the magazine’s stories and pictures have told people about our exciting world.
Technology has changed the way people think about geography. Travel is now easy. The internet makes information sim- ple to find. We trust our phones to take us where we want to go. Even National Geographic has expanded beyond tradi- tional geography, but that doesn’t mean geography has become less important.
Apps like Pokémon Go, foodpanda and Uber are obvious examples of modern geography in action. But geography re- mains important in more subtle ways, too. Geography helps house hunters. It solves public health issues. It determines good locations for new businesses. It is used to plan communities.
Like traditional geographers, modern geographers study many different topics. That makes them well-suited for many dif- ferent jobs and industries. Today, geographers often have titles like “urban planner” or “data analyst.” And the world is noticing. The number of graduates with degrees in geography is on the rise. Demand for geographers is also growing.
Maybe it’s time for you to discover the forgotten science again.
33. Before the internet, what was the world like in geography?
(A) People got a full grasp of their surroundings.
(B) Studying geography prevented people from using their imagination about their environment.
(C) The world was an open book to people.
(D) It was hard for them to figure out how far they were from home.
34. According to the 2nd paragraph, what is NOT TRUE about mapping and geography?
(A) Mapping has always been a focus in geography.
(B) Before the invention of satellites, mapping took years of hard and risky work.
(C) Mapping might provide an opportunity for one to get famous.
(D) Mapping was more popular in Western countries.
