EXTERNAL MERCHANDISE TRADE STATISTICS

JANUARY/2012 No. 1

The total merchandise export for January 2012 amounted to MOP622 million, down by 4.7% year-on- year, of which value of domestic exports (MOP203 million) decreased by 18.4%, but that of re-exports (MOP419 million) increased by 3.8%. Total merchandise import amounted to MOP5.68 billion, up by 16.3% year-on-year.

In January 2012, merchandise trade deficit widened by 19.6% year-on-year to MOP5.06 billion. Total value of external merchandise trade amounted to MOP6.30 billion, up by 13.9% compared with MOP5.53 billion in January 2011.

In January 2012, exports of Textile & garment declined by 31.6% year-on-year to MOP105 million, of which value of Knitted or crocheted garment and Non-knitted or non-crocheted garment decreased by 29.7% and 24.1% respectively. Exports of Non-textile grew by 3.6% year-on-year to MOP517 million, with value of Machines & apparatus, parts & accessories thereof and Articles for casino rising notably by 154.9%

and 165.9% respectively, but that of Clocks & watches dropping by 35.8%.

Analysed by destination, merchandise export to Hong Kong (MOP305 million), the USA (MOP48 million) and the EU (MOP34 million) in January 2012 decreased by 5.1%, 29.6% and 37.7% respectively year-on-year, but that to Mainland China (MOP79 million) increased by 14.6%.

In January 2012, total merchandise import increased by 16.3% year-on-year to MOP5.68 billion, with that of Consumer goods (MOP3.61 billion) and Capital goods (MOP978 million) rising by 16.0% and 23.9%

respectively year-on-year.

Analysed by imports of Consumer goods, in January 2012, value of Food & beverages (MOP805 million) shrank by 4.4% year-on-year; Other durable consumer goods (MOP1.29 billion) grew by 39.4%, with Watches (MOP392 million) rising by 36.1%; Other semi-durable consumer goods (MOP848 million) expanded by 17.1%, with Handbags & wallets (MOP381 million) rising by 44.2%.

Within the imports of Capital goods, growth in imports of information technology products moderated slightly in January 2012, with value of Mobile phones (MOP539 million) rising by 54.3% year-on-year, but that of Portable computers (MOP76 million) falling by 5.4%.

In January 2012, merchandise import from Mainland China (MOP1.73 billion), the EU (MOP1.44 billion) and Hong Kong (MOP665 million) rose by 23.9%, 9.4% and 20.9% respectively year-on-year.
