After several months, the boy finally developed enough self-control and 25 needed to pound nails into the fence. 26 his excitement, he rushed to tell his father about this. His father praised him and suggested that he 27 to pull a nail out of the fence each day if he didn’t get angry. When no nails were left in the fence, he proudly showed his collection of nails to his father. The father hugged the
boy, led him to the fence, and explained that although all the nails were gone, it would always be scarred. Likewise, angry words can leave wounds in people’s minds, and they hurt as much as physical 28 . No matter 29 you do to make up to others, the hurtful words you say will leave scars. Everyone knows the feeling of being angry or hurt. After people have done something terrible to us, it is hard for us to forgive them. Staying angry is often easier.
How can we learn to forgive others, even when we don’t feel ready to? There are some helpful steps we can take when we need to let go of anger.
The first thing is to feel the anger or sadness. That is more helpful than trying to pretend these feelings aren’t there. The next thing is to write down the bad feelings and the reasons why you feel that way. When it is done, throw the paper in the garbage can. It’s a simple act that shows you are on your way to letting go. Then, give yourself some time to forget the bad feelings. It could be a day, a week, or a month. It may even take longer. You can choose a date and make this your goal.
Now it’s time to make yourself believe that the person who made you feel bad should get another chance. Think about the good things about this person. If you feel bad when you think about him or her, say “I forgive him or her for hurting me.” Do this every time you have the bad feelings. You may not believe it at first, but if you say it over and over again, you will start to. When you are ready, you can finally tell the person you forgive him or her face to face.
