The effects of a tentative training model for advanced group leaders –Using a model based on social cognitive theory
Abstract
Content and structure are the two main dimensions included in the training and supervision of group counselors. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of a tentative training model for advanced group leaders. This model is constructed based on social cognitive learning theory. It is particularly designed to be adopted in laboratory teaching and to train advanced group leaders in leading unstructured counseling groups. Both quantitative research method and qualitative research method will be applied in the study.
Quasi-experimental design will be applied in the study on the part of quantitative research. Group Leader Self-Efficacy Instrument will be used as a tool to evaluate leaders’ self-efficacy after session two as well as the last session. GCQ will be utilized to collect members’
perceived group atmosphere at three different time points –the beginning, middle and the final period of a group process. The changes of group atmosphere evaluated by group members will assist in understanding the effect of the leading in a group process.
Regarding to the qualitative research, a video tape will be used as the stimuli on group leading simulation; trainees will fill out the Counseling Group Leading Simulation Evaluation Form after the simulation. This data will be used in analyzing changes of the
leaders’ intervention focus and ntentions occurred before and after the training. In order to know their learning, trainees will also fill out a weekly Group Leader’s Description on Group Concept and Task Focus Form, and these data will be used in analyzing the leader’s intervention strategy. Conclusions drawn from the findings will be used to improve the model.
