HKUST Engineering Experts to Head ASME Hong Kong Chapter

The renowned American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME) has recently approved the formation of a Hong Kong Chapter, the result of a year-long persuasion by its members in Hong Kong. Professor Pin Tong and Assistant Professor Steve H. K. Lee of the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology have been elected Chapter Chairman and Chapter Vice-Chairman respectively.

The inaugural meeting of the ASME Hong Kong Chapter will be from 53Op.m.to 7p.m. on Tuesday 22 November 1994 at the Council Chamber, City University of Hong Kong. Senior executives of ASME, including President Mr.P. Torpey, Executive Director Dr. D. Belden and Assistant Secretary Mr. David J. Sot&up, will fly from the States to join the meeting. Engineering professionals and those who are involved or interested in the profession are also welcome to attend the function.

“The ASME Hong Kong Chapter is formed with a view to fostering closer relationship between universities and the industry,” said Dr. Steve Lee, Chapter Vice- Chairman. “Through concerted efforts by different parties, the Chapter hopes to promote research and development in mechanical engineering and to encourage the pursuit of mechanical engineering studies in Hong Kong.”

The ASME has more than 118,000 members worldwide with international chapters in different countries. The newly formed ASME Hong Kong Chapter has about 200 members. The Chapter welcomes any form of exchange in the realm of academic pursuits and mechanical engineering practice.
