Prof Tian Yow Tsong Appointed

Director of Biotechnology Research Institute

The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology announces the appointment of Professor Tian Yow Tsong as Director of its Biotechnology Research Institute (BRI). Prof Tsong, who assumes his position immediately, will lead the University’s effort to facilitate the development of biotechnology in Hong Kong.

“BRI is focusing on areas of R&D which are most relevant to the economy and well-being of Hong Kong,” says Prof Tsong. “They include food and agricultural biotechnology, environmental biotechnology and medical diagnostics and methods.”

In addition to ongoing research, Prof Tsong indicates that BRI will also develop new research programs in protein design. This will include the establishment of a molecular characterization laboratory at HKUST.

Prof Tsong joined HKUST as Professor of Biochemistry in July 1992 from the University of Minnesota. His research focuses on the biophysical chemistry of proteins and cell membranes, and he has published more than 160 papers in academic journals.

As a scholar of international reputation, Prof Tsong has been invited to speak on his work at over 50 major international scientific workshops and symposia. He has also given seminars and lectures in academic and research institutions in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Spain, the former USSR, Japan and China.

Prof Tsong obtained his PhD in Biophysical Chemistry at Yale University. He is a member of the American Society of Biochemists and Molecular Biologists and the American Biophysical Society. He currently serves as a member of the editorial boards of the Biophysical Journal and the Journal of Bioenergetics

and Biomembranes.
