FIRST INTERNATIONAL ENERGY ENGINEERING SYMPOSIUM

TO BE

H

ELD AT

HKUST

More than 260 energy and thermal engineering specialists around the world will attend the Symposium on Energy Engineering in the 21st Century (SEE2000) to be held at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) on 9-13 January 2000. This is the first time such an important international conference on energy engineering is held in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

The Symposium is organized by the HKUST’s Center for Energy and Thermal Systems (CETS) and the Department of Mechanical Engineering. “The aim of this Symposium is to provide a forum for technical interchange in various aspects of energy engineering. 240 papers will be presented in the 25 technical sessions of the Symposium, covering a variety of topics from heat and mass transfer, and various energy efficient thermal systems, to clean combustion technology,” said Prof Ping Cheng, Director of CETS and Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department.

The deterioration of the environment due to polluted energy sources and the ineffective use of energy have aroused concern around the world, which will no doubt remain one of the major issues in the 21st Century. This is particularly so in Southeast Asia, where industrial growth has taken place at a rapid pace in the last two decades. “At the same time, research in energy engineering is accelerating in this part of the world,” added Prof Cheng. “At HKUST, CETS was recently established for the research on, and development of, energy efficient and environmentally benign thermal systems. It is a privilege for CETS to host the Symposium.”
