Course Description

This course offers a survey of the growing use of technology in museums. It examines applications for information management in collections, digital imaging, and the use of

technology in the service of education both in exhibit contexts and in the variety of educational programs and Web-based dissemination of knowledge.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, the student will:

 Have an understanding of the role of technology in museums and its future development;

 Be familiar with ideas, issues, implications, and basic technological requirements surrounding rapidly evolving changes in digital communication and interactive learning;

 Evaluate critically museum Web sites and various technological applications in museum context such as digital imaging, computer kiosk and multimedia programming.

Expectations

 It is expected that students will contribute their ideas, thoughts, and reflections to class discussions and will listen respectfully to the contributions of others in the class.

 It is expected that students will complete the assignments in a thorough and timely manner.

 It is expected the written work will represent close examination and thoughtful reflections of museum Web sites and assigned readings.

Major Assignments

1. Gallery observation report on the use of technology (15 points)

Visit two local museums that have applied a technology within exhibition context. Make observation and try it yourself. Write a short essay (600 words) on what are the strengths and weakness of this application. Can you find it an effective tool to enhance museum experience?

What are your reasons?

2. Bibliographical reference logs (10 points)

Select FIVE articles written in the last 3-5 years that discuss an issue or topic about using technology in museums. Each article should cover one from of the following areas: education, collections, exhibition, digital imaging, conservation, evaluation methods, marketing,

communication, and e-services solutions. Write a brief summary (250 words) of each article and a paragraph of why you think the issue is significant.

3. Web sites evaluation portfolio (15 points)

You are required to conduct an evaluation portfolio with selection of various Web sites from art, living history, history, children, ethnographic, natural science, natural history museums, to sports, news, music, e-commerce, and entertainment. You need to choose FIVE Web sites that you think is the most significant among its design, content information, and navigation. Then write a short evaluation report (150 words) on why you think this Web site is significant with emphasis on some distinguish sections or features, and personal reflection to the site.

4. Final project (30 points)*

You have to present your final project to the whole class for approximately 20-30 minutes at the end of the semester. You have to options:

A. A Web site development for institutional, educational, collection-based, or e-services site.

B. A computer kiosk or multimedia production in exhibition context C. Design a serious of educational program using media and technology
