As drones become commonplace, what do we need to know?

(3)

What is a drone? In general, a drone is a kind of flying robot that is controlled either remotely or by computers.

While there are some kinds of drones called RoboBoats designed for water, the most popular and well-known drone is the quadcopter. The four rotors of the quadcopter allow it to be both stable and agile.

Drones may become an essential part of our daily lives in the near future. What do you think about them? Do they interest you or intimidate you? As drones become more developed and less expensive, the number of uses for them continues to climb.

Expanding horizons

When you think of potential uses for drones, you may think of package delivery or aerial photography. But drones can be used for much more difficult tasks such as weather monitoring or firefighting. They can also provide

assistance with rapid disaster relief, search and rescue, and delivery of medical supplies. Unobtrusive wildlife

observation and conservation can also benefit from the use of drones. For instance, they are currently being used to follow and study whales and other animals. Some drones have even been designed to plant trees!

One emerging job for drones is semi-autonomous farming. The machines can plant crops reducing costs by 85 percent. They can also assess the health of crops by scanning them for disease. If a bacterial infection is identified on a tree, farmers can treat it quickly and likely save their orchard.

Capability to be dangerous

As drones become more inexpensive and easier to obtain, some fear that drones may change the world for the worse. Drones have long been used for surveillance, and weaponized drones are already in production. A pressing concern for society is whether an autonomous drone should ever have the authority to kill without human consent.

If you are interested in purchasing a drone, it is imperative that you learn about local laws for drone use. Drones are a wonderful technology to enjoy, but owning one comes with responsibility. Ignoring proper protocol could endanger you or others.

Perhaps the best summary of drone use is by innovator Raffaello D'Andrea: “[Drones] may be used to improve the human condition, or they may be misused and abused. This is not a technical choice we are faced with – it is a social one.”

41. What is the main idea of the article?

(A) Drones may become an essential part of our daily lives in the near future.

(B) Drones can be applied only to some limited fields.

(C) Flying a drone can be very interesting and exciting.

(D) How a drone is designed and what parts a drone is included.

42. What does the word "intimidate" in the second paragraph mean?

(A) Humiliate.

(B) Exhaust.

43. Which of the following statement is NOT true about potential uses for drones?

(A) Drones can be used for difficult tasks such as weather monitoring or firefighting.

(B) Drones can plant crops, and assess the health of crops by scanning them for disease.

(C) Drones can be used to deliver medical supplies in a disaster.

(D) Drones can be used to take care of farm animals to reduce the burden of workers.

44. What is the author's conclusion about drone use?

(A) The use of a drone can have capability to be dangerous.

(B) Drones are a wonderful technology to enjoy, but owning one comes with responsibility.

(C) As drones become more inexpensive and easier to obtain, they may change the world for the worse.

(D) The government should pay more attention to the use of drones or it may result in big disasters.

Every year, millions of tons of old electronic products are thrown away by people all over the world. We are living in the digital age, and our digital garbage is really pilling up. This kind of garbage is called electronic waste, or e-waste, and it includes TV monitors, computers, telephones, smartphones, tablets, fax machines,

(4)

printers, refrigerators, and many other kinds of electronic devices.

Most e-waste can actually be recycled, but over 80% of it ends up in heaps at garbage dumps. This is quite alarming because many electronic devices contain poisonous substances such as lead. It's also surprising that more e-waste is not recycled, because a lot of it contains valuable metals such as gold and silver. In fact, USD 60 million worth of gold and silver could be recovered from old phones that people throw away every year. Because of this, people in many developing countries try to process their e-waste. However, without proper safety controls, they run the risk of exposure to dangerous elements.

Many steps are already being taken to improve our methods of recycling e-waste and establish better processing centers around the world. Ordinary people like you and me can help by limiting the number of electronic products we buy, and by making sure that we do recycle them once we can no longer use them.

45. Which of the following would not be considered "e-waste"?

(A) A computer. (B) A mechanical pencil. (C) A digital fan. (D) A CD player.

46. Why is the author surprised that more e-waste is not recycled?

(A) Because it's so easy to recycle it.

(B) Because metals worth lots of money can be recovered from it.

(C) Because it is really bad for the earth and all the people living on it.

(D) Because it contains toxic substances.

47. What is the main idea of the article?

(A) E-waste is the worst kind of waste because it is not recyclable.

(B) The best way to deal with e-waste is by selling it to developing countries.

(C) People shouldn't handle e-waste because of the risks involved.

(D) The digital age has given rise to a new kind of garbage called e-waste.

48. Why is the situation worse in developing countries?

(A) Because they have fewer safety rules for processing e-waste (B) Because they produce more e-waste

(C) Because their e-waste has more lead.

(D) Because they don't recycle e-waste.
