Alishan Railway Station Celebrates Its Reopening
T
he Alishan Railway Station wasinaugurated in mid September after years ofreconstruction, and was highlypraisedby the tourists who witnessed the great moment.Thismagnificentstructure, which cost more than NT$120 million dollars and took more than four years to construct, was built mainly of wood. Most of the signs, including the timetables in the station, are made of wood. The wooden arch-shaped supports are the main artistic feature of the station, making it look old- fashioned. In addition, the balcony above the station offers tourists a great spot to marvel at the fantastic scenery, such as the sunset and therenownedcloud sea. Local business owners alsorecommendviewing the structure at night when it looksparticularly splendid. There is even a special train to go with the new station.
The cabins of the eight cars are made of wood and pulled by a steam locomotive, which adds more retro ambienceto the ride.
Since the Chiayi Forest District Office decided to reconstruct the old station, which wasdevastatedby the 9-21 earthquake in 1999, it had faced a lot ofhindrances. Bad weather, such as typhoons and floods, made construction more difficult than expected. Also, all the wood wasimportedfrom Canada, and this slowed the schedule even more. Although the new station should have been finished last year as it was scheduled, it is worth the wait for tourists after they saw thisincrediblestructure.
The brand new Alishan Railway Station has become the highest and biggest wooden railway station in Taiwan. It is also the newest landmark of Alishan. From now on, tourists can wonder at the grand construction of this station along with the sceniclandscapewhile riding on the train.

Opera Legend Passes Away

he music world lost one of its most renowned and artists in early September, 2007 with thepassing of opera superstar Luciano Pavarotti. In a thatspannedfivedecades, Pavarotti became not only the most famous opera star of his generation, but arguably the most famous of all time. He is widely tobe responsible forbringing the world of opera to millions of listeners and viewers whootherwise might not have given it a chance.The son of a baker, Pavarotti was born in the Italian city of Modena in 1935. His earliest was to be a soccer player, but when that dream died hefocusedhis effortsonbecoming a great singer. He did, and by his early to mid-thirties Pavarotti was touring around Europe and North America, becoming more and more famous in the opera world with each year. By the 1980s, Luciano Pavarotti was ahouseholdname, known to people who had never seen an opera orset foot inan opera house. His to truesuperstardom, however, came when he joined two othertenors, Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras, to perform a concert at the 1990 soccer World Cup. The recording of that concert, which went under thetitleof Carreras-Domingo- Pavarotti: the Three Tenors in Concert, went on to become thebest-selling classicalrecording in history and made the Three Tenors, Pavarottiin particular, rich and famous.
Toward the end of his career, Pavarotti went on to work with many famous singers outside of the opera world to money for various children’s charities. This led him to gain even more fans, with younger music lovers. His death theentireworld of music wondering where its next great tenor will come from.
