Daredevil BASE Jumps from Taipei 101

n December 11th, renowned Austrian BASE jumper Felix Baumgartner impressed his fans and angered authorities when he parachuted from Taipei 101. Without any permission, Baumgartner managed to evadebuilding security and sneak onto anobservation platformhigh over the streets of Taipei. With cameras watching him from above and below, he leapt off the building and then sailed down to the ground in a couple of minutes. Upon landing on a nearby parking garage, he quickly fled to the airport in a waiting car and left the country at once before either police or building security had time torespond. While many whowitnessed thespectaclemay think of Baumgartner as a hero, young people should be aware of the dangersinherentin BASE jumping.

BASE jumping is an extreme sport in which people jump from fixed objects and then parachute to the ground. The acronym “BASE” stands for the four types of fixed objects one can jump from: Building, Antenna, Span (usually a bridge) and Earth. Like all extreme sports, BASE jumping is very dangerous.

Because the jumper usually leaps from arelativelylowaltitude, he or she has very little room for error and even the smallest mistake or miscalculation could be fatal. In the past 25 years there have been approximately120 people killed in BASE jumping accidents.

BASE jumping off of Taipei 101 has been Baumgartner’s dream since the building was awarded the status of tallest in the world three years ago. However, he may have to pay for his illegal act. Authorities in Taiwan plan to pursue legal action against him, even though he has already left the country. Officials in Taipei claim that heendangeredpublic safety and is therefore criminally responsible. Taipei 101 management has said they may sue Baumgartner since his jump caused damage to some building tiles and that Baumgartner and his commercial sponsor, energy drink maker Red Bull, profited from their illegal use of the building. Furthermore, immigration officialsin Taiwan have banned Baumgartner from ever entering the country again.
