New Study Warns Against Pearl Milk Tea
T
he Consumers’ Foundation has released some alarming facts and figures after analyzing the results of a study and survey on the popular Taiwanese refreshment, pearl milk tea. Armed with the findings of a Taipei Medical University Hospital study conducted in 2006, the organization claims that drinking excessive amounts of pearl milk tea may cause adverse health effects and people to consider the risks involved in drinking too much of the popular treat.The study cited by the Consumers’ Foundation found that a single 700ml cup of pearl milk tea a whopping 400 calories—the equivalent of about 300 grams of rice. The Consumers’ Foundation then conducted a survey of almost 7,000 people and found that roughly one six respondents claimed to drink one cup of pearl milk tea per day. In the same survey almost 3% of those admitted to consuming three cups a day. At 400 calories per serving, that is a staggering 1,200 calories—over half of the daily caloric intake for an adult. Drinking three cups of pearl milk tea in a day is the equivalent of eating almost one kilogram of rice but the nutritional value since the majority of the calories in pearl milk tea comes from simple sugars. What’s more, the Consumers’ Foundation claims that if the yearly amount of sugar consumed island-wide were calculated in the form of standard sugar cubes piled on one another, they the height of 545,000 Taipei 101 buildings.
Experts are concerned that consuming excessive sugary drinks can obesity and tooth decay and increases the risk of chronic diseases, such as diabetes. Therefore, authorities are advising people to think twice before reaching a cup of pearl milk tea. They strongly suggest that thirsty people choose water for the sake of their health.

Former German Pilot Claims to Have Shot Down Author of The Little Prince
A
revelation in a soon-to-be published book may finally put to rest the mystery of what happened to famed French author and World War II pilot Antoine de Saint Exupery. The author of the beloved children’s story The Little Prince, which has been translated into more than one hundred languages and has been one of the top fifty bestsellers of all time, was never seen again after his reconnaissance plane disappeared off the coast of France in the summer of 1944. Former German Air Force pilot Horst Rippert, now 88 years of age, recently announced his belief that he shot down and killed the renowned writer.Saint Exupery had only written a handful of books before his death, but in that time he had become very popular. Trained as a pilot in his early 20s, he based many of his books on his own flying experiences. The Little Prince, for which he is now most famous, was published the year before he died and went on to become one of the most widely-read books of the century. On a summer evening in 1944, just one week before the Allied invasion of France, Saint Exupery vanished on a mission while serving as a pilot with the Free French forces.
For years people have wondered exactly what happened that night and what became of Saint Exupery.
