EXTERNAL MERCHANDISE TRADE STATISTICS

JANUARY/2010 No. 1

Total value of merchandise import and export amounted to MOP4.14 billion in January 2010, up by 13.7% year-on-year. The value of total merchandise import for January 2010 amounted to MOP3.52 billion, up by 22.4% year-on-year. However, value of merchandise export was MOP620 million, down by 19.0%

year-on-year, with the value of domestic exports falling by 51.4% to MOP213 million, but that of re- exports rising by 24.3% to MOP407 million.

The trade deficit for January 2010 widened by 37.4% year-on-year to MOP2.90 billion; the exports/imports ratio which reflect import and export trade balance situation was 17.6%, down by 9.0 percentage points year-on-year.

Exports of Textile & garment amounted to MOP151 million, down substantially by 61.2% year-on- year to account for 24.3% of the total merchandise export in January 2010; however, value of Non-textile exports (MOP469 million) increased by 24.6%, with that of Jewellery and Articles for casino rising notably by 140.0% and 195.4% respectively, but value of Machines & apparatus, parts & accessories thereof dropping by 26.6%.

Analyzed by destination of merchandise exports, in January 2010, value of merchandise export to Hong Kong (MOP270 million) and Mainland China (MOP83 million) grew by 28.4% and 1.1% respectively year-on-year, whereas that to the USA (MOP83 million) and the EU (MOP43 million) dropped notably by 65.9% and 54.1% respectively.

In January 2010, total value of merchandise import increased by 22.4% year-on-year. In terms of Broad Economic Categories, the value of imports of Consumer goods (MOP2.20 billion) and Fuels & lubricants (MOP385 million) rose by 45.8% and 7.9% respectively year-on-year, but that of imports of Capital goods (MOP486 million) and Raw materials & semi-manufactures (MOP445 million) declined by 13.2% and 0.5% respectively.

Among the imports of Consumer goods, value of Motor cars & motorcycles (MOP129 million) rose significantly by 87.8% year-on-year, and that of Other durable consumer goods (e.g. jewellery and watches), semi-durable consumer goods (e.g. clothing and footwear) and non-durable consumer goods (e.g. tobacco and skin-care products) grew by 78.4%, 35.6% and 16.0% respectively.

Within the imports of Raw materials & semi-manufactures, the value of textile materials (10.8% of total) fell by 15.1% year-on-year and that of construction materials (8.8%) slid by 54.0%; nevertheless, the value of semi-manufactures of machinery & electrical machines (9.6%) registered an increase of 45.2%.

In January 2010, value of merchandise import from Mainland China (MOP1.02 billion) and Hong Kong (MOP457 million) rose by 20.7% and 51.3% respectively year-on-year, and that from the EU (MOP799 million) and Switzerland (MOP277 million) grew by 13.1% and 50.1% respectively.
