Current quarter

A total of 300,000 individuals participated in cultural activities, accounting for 54.3% of the population aged 16 and above, up by 0.3 percentage points year-on-year.

Local residents participating in cultural activities totalled 253,900; the cultural activity participation rate was 56.7%, down by 2.3 percentage points year- on-year. The respective participation rates for male and female local residents were 56.8% and 56.7%.

Going to the cinema remained the most popular cultural activity for local residents, with 165,500 participants, despite a decrease of 4.6% year-on-year;

followed by going to libraries (131,600), up by 1.6%. Local residents visiting museums or World Heritage sites went down by 12.8% to 100,600.

Local residents participating in only one type of cultural activity accounted for 41.5% of the total, down by 1.5 percentage points year-on-year;

meanwhile, those taking part in two types and three types of cultural activities constituted 29.2% and 17.3% respectively, up by 1.7 and 1.6 percentage points.

Participation Rate by Age Group

Analysed by industry, local employed residents engaging in Education still had the highest participation rate for this activity at 64.8%, up by 9.9 percentage points year-on-year, followed by those working in Public Administration & Social Security, at 42.2%, up by 3.3 percentage points.

Variety of Cultural Participation

Local residents going to the cinema decreased by 4.6% year-on-year to 165,500; the activity participation rate was 37.0%, down by 2.2 percentage points.

The participation rates of local residents aged 16-24 (71.5%) and 25-34 (62.6%) showed notable decline, down by 8.6 and 8.3 percentage points respectively year-on-year; meanwhile, the rates of other age groups registered growth.

Local residents who had watched locally-produced films and videos decreased by 17.2% year-on-year to 30,000, accounting for 18.1% of the local residents going to the cinema, down by 2.8 percentage points.

The participation rate of students going to the cinema dropped by 10.2 percentage points year-on-year to 70.2%, and the rate of non-students fell by 1.2 percentage points to 34.0%.

Local residents going to libraries continued to rise, up by 1.6% year-on- year to 131,600; the activity participation rate edged up by 0.1 percentage point to 29.4%.

Local residents aged 55 and above had the highest participation rate for going to libraries, at 20.8%, up by 3.5 percentage points year-on-year.

The participation rate of students reached 76.8%, more than triple the rate of non-students (25.1%), with the difference between the two narrowing from 55.0 percentage points in the same quarter of 2017 to 51.7 percentage points.

Local residents attending art exhibitions were more active in engaging in cultural activities; 95.3% of them also participated in other types of cultural activities, and the proportion of those who took part in three or more types of activities accounted for 80.8%.

Among the local residents going to art exhibitions, 97.3% attended exhibitions held in Macao and 5.7% attended exhibitions outside Macao.

Among the local residents participating in this activity, 69,700 (69.2% of total) visited museums and 66,600 (66.2%) visited World Heritage sites, down by 10.2% and 24.2% respectively year-on-year.

Variety of Cultural Participation by Activity Type

Local residents attending performances totalled 81,100, up by 2.1% year- on-year; the activity participation rate edged up by 0.1 percentage point to 18.1%. The average attendance per participant decreased by 0.5 year-on- year to 2.1.

Among the local residents attending performances, 98.7% of them attended performances in Macao and 8.5% attended performances outside Macao.

Music/dance performances were still more popular than theatre performances, with 60,200 participants (74.2% of total), up by 4.7% year- on-year. Meanwhile, theatre performances had 40,300 participants (49.7%), down by 18.7%.

Among the local residents aged 55 and above attending performances, 73.2% went to theatre performances; the average attendance per participant was 2.5, the highest among all age groups.

There were 36,000 local residents attending art exhibitions, up by 3.2%

year-on-year; the activity participation rate inched up by 0.1 percentage point to 8.0%. The average attendance per participant dropped by 0.3 year-on-year to 2.0.

The participation rate of local residents aged 35-44 was the highest among all age groups, at 30.9%, albeit a decrease of 6.1 percentage points year-on-year. The average visit per participant of this age group was also the highest, at 3.5.

Cultural activity participation rate: The percentage of individuals participating in cultural activities in the population aged 16 and above. The relevant participation rate is calculated according to the types of cultural activities and demographic characteristics (e.g. gender, age group and educational attainment).

Participants in cultural activities: Individuals aged 16 and above who participate in cultural activities during the reference period, excluding those who participate in such activities for work or learning purposes.

Cultural activities: Include going to cinema, going to libraries, visiting museums or World Heritage sites, attending performances and attending art exhibitions

Visiting museum or World Heritage site: visiting museums or World Heritage sites in Macao Going to library: going to libraries in Macao

Attending performance: attending art performances such as musical, drama, Cantonese opera, opera, orchestra, concert, ballet, folk dance, etc.

Attending art exhibition: attending visual art exhibitions (e.g. photography, painting and calligraphy) and craft exhibitions (e.g. ceramics and embroideries)

Information from the Survey on Participation of Residents in Cultural Activities were collected in the second quarter of 2018 through a supplementary questionnaire of the Employment Survey.

Total sample size consists of 2,100 residential units and the observation unit is individuals aged 16 and above living in these units. In the sample, a total of 1,929 units were occupied, comprising 1,435 successful interviews, 77 refusals and 417 non-contacts; the response rate stood at 74.4%.

In accordance with the UNESCO Framework for Cultural Statistics, and with due consideration of the local context, cultural activities in this survey include:
