• The participation rate of students was 64.4%, higher than the rate of non- students (29.1%) by 35.3 percentage points.

• With the government's efforts to promote locally-produced films and videos in recent years, 12.4% of those going to cinema had watched locally-produced films and videos.

There were 163,000 going to cinema, up by 10.8% year-on-year; the participation rate was 32.4%, up by 1.7 percentage points.

This type of activity was more popular among youngsters, with the participation rate of those aged 16-24 reaching 63.1% when the participation rate of those aged 55 and above was merely 10.0%.

Variety of Cultural Participation

Participants who took part in only one type of cultural activity accounted for 43.7%; meanwhile, 27.5% of the participants took part in three or more types of cultural activities.

A total of 285,000 participated in cultural activities, accounting for 56.7% of the population aged 16 and above, up by 1.8 percentage points in comparison with 54.9% in the second quarter of 2012. The respective rate was 56.6% for male and 56.8% for female.

Among the various cultural activities, watching movie at cinema had the highest number of participants (163,000), followed by visiting museum or World Heritage site (137,000) and going to library (116,000). The number of participants in these three types of cultural activities registered year-on-year increase.

• With the entrance fee to the museum or World Heritage site in Macao being either low or free, the average visit per participant was 3.1 and 67.9% of the participants visited at least twice.

Those visiting museums or World Heritage sites totalled 137,000, an increase of 12.4% year-on-year; the participation rate was 27.1%, up by 1.8 percentage points.

There were 42,000 attending art exhibitions, up by 2.1% year-on-year;

the participation rate dropped slightly by 0.2 percentage points to 8.3%.

The participation rate of those aged 16-24 had the highest rate of 30.0%, with an average attendance of 1.9 performances per participant.

Moreover, the participation rate of those aged 45-54 was 16.3%, and 16.4% for those aged 55 and above; the average attendance per participant was 2.6 and 2.7 performances respectively.

Among those attending performances, there were 100,000 attending local performances and 6,000 attending performances outside Macao.

Those attending performances totalled 104,000, down by 3.1% year-on- year; the participation rate decreased by 1.7 percentage points to 20.6%.

Those attending music or dance performances dropped by 2.1% to 78,000, and those attending theatre performances fell slightly by 0.3% to 53,000.

The majority were the middle-aged and the elderly; the participation rate for the residents aged 35-44 was 34.5%, and the rate of those aged 45-54 was 23.3% and 21.7% for those aged 55 and above.

Among those going to art exhibitions, there were 40,000 attending local exhibitions and 2,000 attending exhibitions outside Macao.

The reference period of participation of residents in cultural activities refers to the six months prior to the date of interview.

In accordance with the UNESCO Framework for Cultural Statistics, and with due consideration of the local context, cultural activities in this survey include:

Going to cinema: watching movies at cinema or in other public places

Visiting museum or World Heritage site: visiting museums or World Heritage sites in Macao Going to library: going to libraries in Macao

Attending performance: attending art performances such as opera, drama, Cantonese opera, orchestra, concert, ballet, folk dance, etc.

Attending art exhibition: attending visual art exhibitions (e.g. photography, painting, drawing, etc.) and craft exhibitions (e.g. ceramics, embroideries, etc.)

Data on the Survey on Participation of Residents in Cultural Activities were collected in the second quarter of 2013 through a supplementary questionnaire of the Employment Survey.

Total sample size consists of 2,100 residential units and the observation unit is residents aged 16 and above living in these units. In the sample, a total of 1,988 units were occupied, comprising 1,626 successful interviews, 54 refusals and 308 non-contacts; the response rate stood at 81.8%.

There were 116,000 going to the library, up by 4.8% year-on-year; the participation rate stayed unchanged as the same period of 2012, at 23.1%.

The participation rate of those aged 45-54 had the lowest rate of 15.9%, followed by those aged 55 and above (16.6%).

Main reasons for not participating in cultural activities were “No time” and

“No interest”.

The participation rate of students reached 68.4%, higher than the rate of non-students (18.4%) by 50.0 percentage points.
