The numbers of local residents going to the library (108,200) and to the cinema (96,000) were the highest, despite showing respective decreases of 21.4% and 42.4% year-on-year. Meanwhile, a relatively large decline of 47.9% was recorded in the number of local residents attending performances (40,700) across the various cultural activities.
Local residents participating in only one type of cultural activities accounted for 53.3% of the total, up by 11.2 percentage points year-on-year; on the other hand, the proportions of those participating in two types and three types of activities dropped by 5.4 and 3.5 percentage points to 26.8% and 12.9%

Local residents who took part in cultural activities totalled 196,900. The cultural activity participation rate was 43.3%, down by 13.7 percentage points year-on-year; male and female local residents had respective participation rates of 42.9% and 43.5%.

Owing to the cancellation or postponement of some performances, exhibitions and screenings amid the pandemic of novel coronavirus pneumonia as well as a lower willingness of residents to go out, number of individuals participating in cultural activities fell substantially by 24.7% year-on-year to 229,100, representing 39.4% of the population aged 16 and above, a decrease of 15.0 percentage points year-on-year.

There were 108,200 local residents who had been to a library, a decrease of 21.4% year-on-year. The activity participation rate dropped by 6.7 percentage points to 23.8%.
The participation rate of students fell by 15.3 percentage points year-on- year to 66.1%, which was about 3.3 times as high as the rate for non- students (20.1%). The difference between the two rates narrowed from 55.1 percentage points in the second quarter of 2019 to 46.0 percentage points.

Analysed by industry, employed residents working in Education had the highest participation rate of 46.8%, followed by those working in Public Administration & Social Security, at 30.7%.
Number of local residents going to the cinema decreased significantly by 42.4% year-on-year to 96,000 amid the pandemic, and the activity participation rate reduced by 15.8 percentage points to 21.1%; yet, number of those who had watched locally produced films and videos increased by 20.0% to 38,700, which made up 40.3% of the local residents going to the cinema, a rise of 20.9 percentage points.

The participation rates of students and non-students going to the cinema were 42.0% and 19.3% respectively, showing respective declines of 27.7 and 14.9 percentage points year-on-year.
In addition, local residents who had watched movies on the Internet or from discs totalled 280,300, down by 8.5% year-on-year.

Number of local residents who visited art exhibitions decreased by 29.7%
year-on-year to 23,900, the lowest number of participants among all activities. The activity participation rate reduced by 2.3 percentage points to 5.2%, and the average number of visits per participant dropped by 0.4 to 2.0.
Among them, 98.9% attended local exhibitions while 3.1% went to exhibitions outside Macao.
Local residents who visited art exhibitions were more active in engaging in cultural activities, with 90.2% of them participating in other cultural activities; those who took part in three or more types of activities accounted for 75.3% of the total.
Number of local residents visiting museums or World Heritage sites decreased by 11.0% year-on-year to 76,700, and the activity participation rate went down by 2.3 percentage points to 16.8%. The average number of visits for this activity edged down by 0.1 year-on-year to 3.1.
Among the local residents who participated in this activity, those visiting World Heritage sites increased by 9.9% year-on-year to 64,000 (83.5% of total) while those going to museums dropped by 28.0% to 43,900 (57.3%).

2.2 The participation rate of individuals aged 35-44 grew by 0.9 percentage points year-on-year to 25.8%, which was the highest across all age groups. The average number of visits of this age group was 3.3, an increase of 0.3.
There were 40,700 local residents who attended performances, down by 47.9% year-on-year. The activity participation rate slid by 8.4 percentage points to 8.9%, while the average attendance per participant rose slightly by 0.1 to 2.4.
Among them, 96.1% attended performances in Macao while 5.4% went to performances outside Macao.
Music/dance performances were still more popular than theatre performances, with 27,100 participants (66.7% of total), despite a year- on-year fall of 54.5%. Theatre performances had 22,900 participants (56.3%), down by 32.6%.
Among the local residents aged 55 and above who attended performances, 73.9% went to theatre performances. Their average attendance topped the list compared to other age groups, at 3.4, up by 0.5 year-on-year.

Glossary and Others
Information from the Survey on Participation of Residents in Cultural Activities were collected in the second quarter of 2020 through a supplementary questionnaire of the Employment Survey.
Total sample size consists of 2,100 residential units and the observation unit is individuals aged 16 and above living in these units. In the sample, a total of 1,970 units were occupied, comprising 1,653 successful interviews, 33 refusals and 284 non-contacts; the response rate stood at 83.9%.

The main reasons for not participating in cultural activities were “ No interest” and “No time”.
In addition, the proportion of local residents who did not participate due to
“Other” reasons increased year-on-year in the wake of the pandemic.
Meanwhile, 26.6% of the local residents who did not visit museums or World Heritage sites stated that they had “Visited before”.
