Local residents who took part in cultural activities totalled 250,400 and the cultural activity participation rate climbed by 10.7 percentage points year-on- year to 54.0%. Male and female local residents had respective participation rates of 53.7% and 54.3%.

As affected by the pandemic of novel coronavirus pneumonia, the number of individuals participating in cultural activities showed a substantial decline compared to the same quarter last year. Some performances, exhibitions and film screenings gradually resumed as pandemic preventive routine was established. Number of individuals participating in cultural activities surged by 27.0% year-on-year to 291,000, which represented 51.4% of the population aged 16 and above, up by 12.0 percentage points year-on-year.

The numbers of local residents going to the library (150,900) and to the cinema (124,300) were the highest, which increased by 39.4% and 29.5% year-on- year respectively. Meanwhile, the number of local residents visiting museums or World Heritage sites (123,100) logged the largest growth of 60.6%

among all cultural activities.

Local residents participating in only one type of cultural activity accounted for 48.3% of the total, down by 5.0 percentage points year-on-year. The proportions of those taking part in two types and three types of activities grew by 0.2 and 4.7 percentage points to 27.0% and 17.6% respectively.

Survey on Participation of Residents in Cultural Activities

There were 150,900 local residents who had been to a library, an increase of 39.4% year-on-year. The activity participation rate rose by 8.7 percentage points to 32.5%.

The participation rate of students increased by 14.5 percentage points year-on-year to 80.6%, which was about 2.8 times as high as the rate for non-students (28.6%). The difference between the two rates widened from 46.0 percentage points in the same quarter last year to 52.0 percentage points.

In addition, local residents who watched movies on the Internet or from discs totalled 315,300, up by 6.4% year-on-year.

The participation rates of students and non-students going to the cinema were 52.3% and 24.7% respectively, showing respective increases of 10.3 and 5.4 percentage points year-on-year.

Local residents aged 16-24 had the highest participation rate of 55.9%, a growth of 12.0 percentage points year-on-year. This was followed by those aged 25-34, with a rate of 46.2%, up by 7.9 percentage points.

Number of local residents going to the cinema increased by 29.5% year- on-year to 124,300, and the participation rate grew by 5.7 percentage points to 26.8%. However, the number of those who had watched locally produced films and videos decreased by 14.2% year-on-year to 33,200, which accounted for 26.7% of the total number of local residents going to the cinema, down by 13.6 percentage points.

Analysed by industry, the majority of the employed residents who took part in this activity were engaged in Gaming & Junket Activities (16,800), Public Administration & Social Security (11,600) and Education (8,000), with the respective participation rates of 22.6%, 41.4% and 51.5%.

Number of local residents who visited art exhibitions went up by 18.2%

year-on-year to 28,200, the lowest number of participants among all activities. The activity participation rate increased by 0.9 percentage points to 6.1%, and the average number of visits per participant dropped by 0.2 to 1.8.

Among them, 97.9% attended local exhibitions while 2.6% went to exhibitions outside Macao.

Among the local residents who took part in this activity, those who visited World Heritage sites increased by 57.4% year-on-year to 100,800 (81.8%

of total), while those going to museums surged by 81.4% to 79,700 (64.7%).

The participation rate of individuals aged 35-44 rose by 12.8 percentage points year-on-year to 38.6%, which was the highest across all age groups. The average number of visits for this age group was 3.6, an increase of 0.3.

There were 38,600 local residents who had attended performances, down by 5.2% year-on-year. The activity participation rate dropped by 0.6 percentage points to 8.3%. The average attendance per participant decreased by 0.2 year-on-year to 2.2.

Among them, 98.4% attended performances in Macao while 3.1% went to performances outside Macao.

Among the local residents who participated in this activity, 30,300 (78.6%

of total) had watched theatre performances, a rise of 32.4% year-on-year, whereas those who had watched music/dance performances declined by 31.5% to 18,600 (48.2%).

those who took part in three or more types of activities accounted for 74.8% of the total.

With the promotion of local tours, number of local residents visiting museums or World Heritage sites soared by 60.6% year-on-year to 123,100, and the activity participation rate climbed by 9.8 percentage points to 26.6%. Meanwhile, the average number of visits for this activity decreased by 0.2 year-on-year to 2.9.

Among the cultural activities in which local residents did not participate

"Due to the pandemic", "going to cinema" and "attending performance"

topped the list, with respective proportions of 18.0% and 16.7%.

Cultural activity participation rate: The percentage of individuals participating in cultural activities in the population aged 16 and above. The relevant participation rate is calculated according to the types of cultural activities and demographic characteristics (e.g.

gender, age group and educational attainment).

Participants in cultural activities: Individuals aged 16 and above who participate in cultural activities during the reference period, excluding those who participate in such activities for work or learning purposes.

Cultural activities: Include going to cinema, going to libraries, visiting museums or World Heritage sites, attending performances and attending art exhibitions

Visiting museum or World Heritage site: visiting museums or World Heritage sites in Macao (Including the use of the Macao Museum’s virtual tour app) Going to library: going to libraries in Macao (Including the use of electronic resources of the Macao Public Library etc.)

Attending performance: attending art performances such as musical, drama, Cantonese opera, opera, orchestra, concert, ballet, folk dance, etc.

Attending art exhibition: attending visual art exhibitions (e.g. photography, painting and calligraphy) and craft exhibitions (e.g. ceramics and embroideries)

Glossary and Others

Information from the Survey on Participation of Residents in Cultural Activities were collected in the second quarter of 2021 through a supplementary questionnaire of the Employment Survey.

Total sample size consists of 2,100 residential units and the observation unit is individuals aged 16 and above living in these units. In the sample, a total of 1,946 units were occupied, comprising 1,618 successful interviews, 34 refusals and 294 non-contacts; the response rate stood at 83.1%.
