Abstract

This study aimed at toddlers and children under three years of age at a day care center in Sin-Ju Science Park in the city of Sin-Ju .The purposes of the study were as follows: 1.To understand how toddlers and children under three years old respond to the picture book--The Very Hungry Caterpillar. 2.To explore the possibility of using the picture book to design extended activities for

toddlers and children under three years old.

The researchers designed a story box including a series of related teaching activities and materials with The Very Hungry Caterpillar story in mind .The results showed that the toddlers express their responses through various facial expressions, body movements, and verbal reactions. Although some of their verbal responses did not match the question in the course of storytelling. Sometimes, they might repeat the words that were read aloud . In contrast, children who

are under three years old seemed to be able to answer the questions with appropriate answers.

The study provides suggestions for parents and day care teachers ,based on the results.
