Resident population of Macao was estimated at 543 000 as at 31 March 2008, an increase of about 23 000 year-on-year.

In the first quarter of 2008, there were 1 076 live births, down by 20.4% over the previous quarter, but up by 8.5% over the same quarter of 2007. The sex ratio of the newborn was 108.5, with 560 male babies.

The number of mortality cases totalled 513, up by 32.2% quarter-to-quarter and 20.1%

year-on-year. The major underlying causes of death included “Diseases of the circulatory system”

(159 cases) and “Malignant neoplasms” (117 cases). Meanwhile, 2 cases of fetal mortality were recorded in the first quarter of 2008.

The Health Bureau received 570 cases of Notifiable diseases in the first quarter, a decrease of 57 cases over preceding quarter, including 274 cases of “Varicella (chickenpox)”, 96 cases of

“Tuberculosis of lung” and 73 cases of “Rotaviral enteritis”; meanwhile, 26 cases of “Hand, foot and mouth diseases” were included.

In addition, 684 cases of marriage were registered, up notably by 35.2% quarter-to-quarter and year-on-year.

In the first quarter of 2008, a total of 1 605 individuals were authorized to reside in Macao, while 268 had their right of abode cancelled, bringing the end-quarter balance to 43 292, up by 1 337 quarter-to-quarter and 5 484 year-on-year. Meanwhile, the end-quarter balance of non-resident workers was 90 013, up by 4 806 quarter-to-quarter and 18 831 year-on-year.

Moreover, there were 515 legal immigrants from Mainland China, down by 13.6% (81) compared with the previous quarter, but up by 3.6% (18) over the first quarter of 2007. Meanwhile, 355 illegal immigrants were repatriated, down by 3.3% quarter-to-quarter and 3.0% year-on-year.
