At first sight the plant Mars does not appear very welcoming to any kind of life. It has very little oxygen and water; the temperature at night is below -50℃ and winds of 100 miles per hour cause severe dust storms. However, the surface of the planet seems to show that water flowed across it at some time in the past, and it is believed there is enough ice at the poles to cover the planet with water if it melted. Although there is no life on Mars now, some scientists think that there may have been some form of life a long time ago. At that time, the planet had active volcanoes; the atmosphere was thicker and warmer; and there was water. In fact, in some ways Mars may have been similar to Earth, where life exits.

Some people believe that Mars could support life in the future if the right conditions were produced. The first step would be to warm the planet using certain gases which trap the sun’s heat in the plant’s atmosphere. With warmth, water and carbon dioxide, simple plants could begin to grow. These plants could slowly make Mars habitable. It is estimated that the whole process might take between 100,000 and 200,000 years. In the meantime, people could begin to live on the planet in special closed environments. They would provide a lot of useful information about conditions on Mars and the problems connected with living there.

(A)it supported life in the past

(B) the planet’s volcanoes become as active as they were in the past (C) certain gases are used to cool the planet

(D)the atmosphere can be heated enough to grow simple plants

Today’s lecture will center on the influence of mythology on the English language. It’s not common to read or write without drawing upon myth-oriented adjectives or idioms. Let’s have a look at a couple of examples.

In the lyrics of the Phantom of the Opera, “…And in this labyrinth where night is blind, the Phantom of the Opera is here inside my mind...” “Labyrinth” was a dangerous maze on the Greek island of Crete, built for King Minos. Sacrificial victims were sent into the Labyrinth from which it was almost impossible to escape.

At the center was the monster, the Minotaur. So it’s easy to see why “labyrinth” is used in the lyrics. It was difficult to escape from the monstrous Phantom’s keep.

Another example can be found in newspapers. “It would take a Herculean effort for the Republicans to win a majority of seats in the House and Senate.” The phrase

“Herculean effort” was related to a Greek hero, Hercules, son of Zeus and a mortal woman. He killed his own wife and children in a state of madness. For the murders, he was punished to perform twelve Labors. Each of them was considered to be impossible but he completed all of them. So we know the report simply means it is not easy for the Republicans to win a majority of seats in the House and Senate.

● 10. What point does the speaker make about the myth-related phrases? (B) A) They are not often used nowadays.

B) They play an important part in the English language.

C) They are quite controversial.

D) There are only two examples about them.

● 11. What does “labyrinth” mean in today’s English? (A) A) A place with many paths where you can easily get lost.

B) A basement where there is a monster inside.

C) A dark place where there is full of blind people.

D) A prison where victims or criminals are kept.

(12)

● 12. What does “Herculean task” probably refer to today? (D) A) An easy job.

B) A relaxed manner.

C) Considerable interest.

D) Difficult work.

II.

Hello, everyone. I’m your tour guide, Jason. Welcome to Athens, a city rich in history and tradition. We’ve got lots of museums and archaeological sites to visit.

The first place we’re going to visit is Plato’s Academy. As you see, Academy is a suburb of Athens. It is named after the hero, Academos. There were people living in this place from the prehistoric period until the 6th century AD.

Plato founded his philosophical school here. The school became very famous due to the Neoplatonists, and it remained in use until 526 AD, when it was finally closed down by Emperor Justinian.

On your left hand side is one of the three famous Gymnasiums of Athens. It’s a large rectangular building with rooms on the north side and a space inside surrounded by columns. It’s called an internal peristyle in architecture. This gym could date back to the first century AD.

Over there is the Sacred House, a building of the Geometric period. It has seven rectangular rooms on either side of a corridor. The structure presents strong similarity to the sacred house of Eleusis. This is shown in the pamphlet you got. The place is believed to have been a spot for religious practice because sacrificial remains were found inside the building.

OK. That’s it about Plato’s Academy. Now, you have 30 minutes to walk around and take pictures and five minutes for the restroom. Come back to the bus at three o’clock sharp. Thanks and enjoy yourselves.

● 13. Which spot is not in the historical site of Academy? (B) A) Gymnasium.

B) Eleusis.

C) Plato’s school.

D) Sacred House.

● 14. What can we know from the excavations in the Sacred House? (A) A) Some religious rituals took place there.

B) The house was surrounded by columns.

C) There were seven rectangular rooms.

D) It used to be a huge prison.

● 15. What time does the tour guide dismiss the tourists? (D) A) 3:00

(13)

B) 3:35 C) 2:30.

D) 2:25
